Ideas that You Just Can't Get Out of Your Head

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

MLP FIM RTS

I know the idea of a real-time strategy game (or any game involving war) goes against every theme of Friendship is Magic, but it’s such a fun setting that I feel is very ripe for making diverse factions for epic pony wars.

Every couple of months, I return to my spreadsheets and word documents on analyzing Equestria Divided, trying to flesh out tech trees for PoorYorick’s units while adding OC units of my own creation and others where necessary for balancing each army. All for a game I will likely never get to program.

I might need help.

@PonyPon
Well, I’m kinda in my “clean-up phase” right now, since the spreadsheets and word docs kinda got outta control (to the point where even I have trouble figuring out my own thought process).

I do have this, though! It’s a spreadsheet where I tried to organize PoorYorick’s units and the “fan-units” the FIMFiction ED group has created in one of our threads, and still intend to expand and finish this. There’s no real filter on the fan-units, but I figured if I started getting picky about what I did or didn’t include then that’s a slippery slope.

Feel free to add comments! I enabled them for a reason, you know.

I remember when you posted a thread on that topic a while back. It stuck in my head because I’m a big fan of RTS games (even though I kinda suck at them). And as it sat there, it inspired two ideas of my own that I’ve been mulling over these past few months:

  1. An EqG faction for Equestria Divided. It wouldn’t be a serious faction for competitive play; rather, it’d be a comically overpowered NPC faction, only available through bonus missions and cheat codes. The idea would be to play up the “humans as aliens” angle by turning them into a sci-fi invasion force. Fluff-wise, they’d be a military research expedition sponsored by an unreformed Sunset Shimmer, draining Equestria’s magic to fuel advanced technology back home (and possibly to prepare the land for colonization). Mechanically they’d work like the armies from Command & Conquer, with tanks, jets, commandos, and superweapons, plus “Equestrian hybrids” (ponied-up infantry) and “harmonic weaponry” (powered by the forgotten magic of friendship).

  2. An “authentic” MLP RTS, by which I mean one that could pass as a licensed product. Instead of adapting the setting to fit a traditional RTS model, it’d be about adapting RTS mechanics to fit the Equestria of canon. Since there’s no killing in Equestria, there’d be a much stronger emphasis on economics, diplomacy, and subterfuge. Since most of the fighting in Equestria is done by the militia, you’d have to manage your units’ morale and loyalty instead of taking their obedience for granted. And since MLP is a character-driven toyline at heart, you’d be dealing with a roster of unique individuals rather than fungible classes of units. In that regard it would be much like a MOBA, except with one person controlling the entire team.

    If you’d like, I can dredge up that old thread to give a more complete write-up of either of these ideas.

@Background Human
Nice! I’d love to hear more about both. I admittedly suck at RTSes too, but I’ve always enjoyed thinking about them. I forgot we even had a thread for this topic.

  1. In Blizzard RTSes, it seems like there’s always some sort of super-threatening enemy army in the campaign that all the (reasonably) good guys have to set aside their differences to fight. Even as someone who’s not really a fan of humans in Equestria being bastards, I feel like the ED setting would be great for that sorta stuff because most of the pony population are bastards themselves. Oooh! And that could be a sort of enemy faction in a cooperative PvE mode: you and your allies have to desperately hold out and use whatever tactics you can to halt a human expedition.

  2. That reminds me of how I’d be interested in seeing a comedic/fun/“lighter & softer” RTS using a different setting than standard warfare as a backdrop. For example, Pinkie Pie having to make her own “living dishes” to fight against rebellious ingredients in the Cake’s kitchen. Or Fluttershy commanding armies of animals to help subdue enraged animals that need medical attention. Really, a lot of different MLP scenarios could be adapted into an RTS without changing the tone of the show. I’d love to see what you’ve came up with, though.

An arcade/puzzle videogame built around Twilight and her “blink” (teleport) ability.

You aim the direction you want her to teleport, and the distance of her teleport is controlled by holding down the right mouse button. Like a bowstring, the longer you hold down her teleport button the further she goes. Except in special circumstances, she will need physical line-of-sight for her destination, which means she can teleport through bars and glass but will need to use mirrors, scrying, cameras, etc. to jump to other locations.

Sunny Day Realtor
A story based around a couple of people who are preparing to commit a mass murder of some kind that explores the delusion and romanticization that surrounds committing this kind of act.

The motivation would be politically charged in nature, because that’s really the only thing I could think of that would come across as sincere with the exception of religion, which is currently a boring and overplayed topic when it comes to this kinds of violent acts. It’d need to be some relatable political motivation that most people can connect with and starts off with the purist intent from a story perspective, but slowly builds up to the extremist beliefs without a tonal shift in how the protagonist(s) view it. I dunno if I would rather it be in 1st or 3rd person point of view. While 1st person would allow for a deeper exploration into the mindset of a singular character and possibly create more of a bond with the reader/viewer, 3rd person would capture the group dynamic and the outer circumstances better as a whole. When the climactic mass killings happen it would need to be sprung forth in a way that is very sudden and unexpected, but there would be little, very subtle hints building up to it to try and let the reader/viewer know “Hey, something isn’t right here.”

It’s just a little inklet idea I’ve been tossing back and forth in my head four an hour or so. Thing is, I get what I feel to be these great ideas for stories and how to execute them, but the way I would like them to be executed is something that is usually extremely difficult to pull off (i.e. putting something right in front of the reader/viewer and trying to fool them into thinking it isn’t there) and I lack the talent and the time in order to make this into what I want it to be :V

Ah well. This song is what inspired this idea, at any rate.

“Friendship is Mundane”
Same MLP but magic does not exist.
Cloudsdale is built on a tower (because nobody can walk on clouds), and pegasi are super vulnerable due to their light and fragile bodies that allow them to take flight. Weather control or sonic rainbooms are also out of the question.
Unicorns only have horns and nothing else, and TS’ area of interest is Science!
Cutie marks don’t appear per se, though ponies still choose one and put in on clothing and such when they come of age.
Celestia is much younger and has nothing to do with raising the sun. Luna is in prison.

Basically, everything in MLP is still sort of around but justified by some nonmagical cause and effect.
