  • Newbie Artist Training Grounds Final Gallery

Hello everyone and I don't just mean our participants in the NATG this year! As always when we have another summer roll around we have the NATG and as always we have pony artists of all different skill levels, both big and small, participate. While the number of participants may be lower this year, the enthusiasm sure was not as I believe this group of students was some of our most dedicated yet and I could not be more proud of them.

Over the course of the NATG they managed to draw up a storm and bring us 2172 ponies in total! Another impressive showing by our artists this year.

And now that the NATG has come to an end, it is time for them all to graduate from this year's event and I hope you all join me in congratulating them! Check out the gallery after the break and make sure to leave some encouraging comments, I'm sure they will love to see them.

As for my students this year, it was an honor to have you and I can't wait to see you all again when this kicks off in full swing next year!
  • Newbie Artist Training Grounds XIII: Day 30

Every individual picture, every individual day has been a journey for us all these past 30 days. Some pieces came naturally while others you struggled with. Some days you had time and some you wondered if you'd even have 15 minutes to sketch. And there were some pieces you were proud of and others you'd count as duds. Over the past 30ish days you all have experienced the ups and downs of what it means to be an artist, veteran, and newbie alike and while it may be tough, I hope the good far outweighs the bad for you and you take what you learned here to what awaits you ahead.

Today we brought in 84 ponies which brings us up to 2175 ponies in total! Excellent job everyone, let's finish strong.

Well, here it is, the final day everyone. You've done all you can for me and I am proud of all the work you've done. As such, today is the day you graduate, another NATG done and dusted. So celebrate the fact you made it through this year (or another year if you're a veteran) and get some rest after this, you've earned it. For today all I want you to do is Draw a pony graduating / Draw a pony making their dreams come true.

  • Newbie Artist Training Grounds XIII: Makeup Day 3

Now that is a lot of pony. It's funny to think we've gone through almost 30 prompts already and with all those prompts so many different ways our ponies can interact with one another. With all of the creativity and positivity we've had this year, I must say this has to be one of our best NATGs yet.

For today we managed to bring in 43 ponies which brings us up to 2091 ponies in total! Just a couple more days to get that total up there, gang!

As for today, it's our final Makeup Day! So make sure you spend your time wisely, it might be a day to rest, but it's a good day to get caught up on your 'homework' before the event is done! We've only got one more prompt after this, you know?

As they say, all good things must come to an end, but that doesn't mean it has to be over completely. The skills and techniques I am hoping our artists have acquired over the past 30 prompts will lead them to new discoveries and new journeys outside of the NATG. What exactly awaits them in the year ahead? It's hard to say, but I hope whatever they end up doing they find it rewarding.

For today we brought in 59 ponies which brings us to 2048 ponies in total! We managed to break the 2k mark before the end, everyone! Well done!

Now for today's prompt, it's one that is well known to all of our veterans of the NATG. When Phoe invented it years ago it was a toughie then and remains one of our toughest prompts now. That's right, today I want you to Draw as many previous prompts in a single picture as you can / Draw a pony scrambling. You'll find a list of our prompts after the break

If there is a pony that would know about catching their second wind, it would be AJ. With a busy workload every day, she manages to power through it every day without fail. The same can be said with art, when you have deadlines or have a project you want done, sometimes you're going to have to go above and beyond to get it done. Let's just hope that second wind is there for you when you need it.

For today we brought in 61 ponies which brings us up to 1987 ponies in total! So close to 2k, everyone!

Well, everyone, you've made it all to day 28! The last of the days with a mystery prompt before we get down to the final prompts that wrap up this year's NATG! Considering our ponies have been through a lot it's time for them to start wrapping up their own journeys along with you. So for today I'd like you to Draw a pony at the end / Draw a pony finishing a long journey.

The toughest parts of any project, in my opinion, are starting it as well as making the push at the end to finish it. While we may have the will to go on, the body tires and so does the mind after working so hard for so long. At least when you're close to the end you know it's almost over, which should be enough to push you over the finish line.

Of all of our tired ponies we managed to bring in 59 ponies for today, which brings us up to 1926 ponies in total!

Speaking of the end, it's about that time when we have to wrap things up for the year. So while we are all tired and have been working hard for all of these seemingly endless days, the end is indeed in sight. That's why for today I ask you to hold on a little bit longer as you Draw a pony finding their second wind / Draw a pony racing to the finish.

I always like it when we have a holiday or some sort of special real-life event for the NATG. It gives us a reason to share a bit about ourselves while having a bit of fun in the process. But now that the celebrating is over, it's time to get back to the grindstone! We're almost at the finish!

For today we managed to bring in 58 ponies which brings us up to 1867 ponies in total! Well done!

As the final days of the NATG are fast approaching, I can tell the fatigue is starting to creep in, if even just a little bit. The NATG is certainly a marathon, no matter the skill level, but I believe by giving you all so much in such a short time you've learned a bit about what you do well and what you can improve. While it does lead to growth, there is no denying how tiring it can be so for today I would like you to Draw a pony who is dead tired / Draw a pony running on empty.

As always you can find the submitter here.

With great discoveries can sometimes come great consequences as well. Now, while all of these consequences aren't necessarily bad, making revelations about yourself or the world around you can have a profound impact on your life all the same. As an artist, it is good to be introspective, to take the time to think about what you want out of the craft and what artwork makes you happy. Just be able to handle what you discover.

For today we managed to fetch in 62 ponies which now brings us to 1809 ponies in total! We're quickly closing in on the 2k mark everyone!

As for our next prompt, another cheery one and a chance to share a little bit more about yourself as well! Considering it is 4th of July in the US today, I figured let's give holidays of all times of the year and from all different cultures some love today as well! Thus, I would like you to Draw a pony celebrating your favorite holiday / Draw a pony taking a breather.

Now if there is one pony to set up a party on the last day of the world you can count on it being Pinkie Pie. What better way to go out, am I right? But even if when the world isn't ending it's still good to have fun and live life like there is no tomorrow. Keep that sort of excitement and merriment in your hearts and it'll surely make you see every day all the brighter.

As we wind down another day of the NATG, we say 59 ponies sent in today which brings us up to 1747 ponies in total! Nicely done everyone!

For our next prompt, it's one I remember having used earlier during other NATG events but this time have decided to save it for now now that your skills have started to bud and grow. With some experience under your belts, the things you are discovering now are different from when you started this event and I wonder what sort of discoveries your ponies may have as I want you to Draw a pony making a great discovery / Draw a pony opening Pandora's Box.

Sometimes apologizing and making things right takes a lot of courage especially if you're already someone who is looked up to. Regardless of how many know you or not, what matters is making sure your apology is genuine and from the heart. Artists or not, this is an important lesson for anyone, and hopefully will make the world just a little bit kinder.

Today we managed to bring in 56 ponies which brings us up to 1688 ponies now as we steadily make our way towards the end of the NATG!

Considering the topics we've had have been kind of heavy lately, I wanted you all to have a bit of slice of life for tonight, especially since a holiday is coming up in the States. That's why for today I want you all to cut loose and Draw a pony partying like there is no tomorrow / Draw a pony raising the roof.

Now that is a mood. I remember being in the same exact situation many times, trying to get assignments done or working on my thesis. I am glad those times are over, but also glad I got to experience them. And I am sure many of our artists are feeling the same way, staying up late and getting ground down by it all, but we don't have much time left, the goal is in sight. You all can do it!

As for today, we managed to get 66 ponies which brings us up to 1632 ponies in total.

Moving on to today's prompt, we had a chance to look into the darkness and at the end of the darkness is usually a light at the end of the tunnel! Of course, to get ourselves back on our feet we sometimes have to work and fix things that may have broken during our darkest moments. That's why for today I'd like you all to Draw a pony facing a mistake from their past / Draw a  pony putting the pieces back together.

    Source - Vapor Trail

Good evening ladies and gentlemen! I hope you all managed to enjoy your Makeup Day, whether it was relaxing or getting caught up on prior prompts. Either way, I hope today wasn't too stressful for you all as it is always important to take breaks when you can so you don't end up burning out. Hopefully, the rest you all got can take you through to the end of the NATG!

Today we managed to get 63 ponies which now brings us up to 1556 ponies in total. Nicely done once again everyone!

For today's prompt as we enter into the final leg of our NATG journey, I wanted to give you all a chance to practice some different kinds of lighting you might not have been used to up to this point. So far many of our ponies have been shown in the light, but the night offers just as many opportunities for adventure as well as practice for your lighting and shading skills. So for today, I want you to Draw a pony staying up late / Draw a pony kept in the dark.

You know, I've never gone to a water park before, but considering just how hot it has been lately, maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea?

Today we managed to nab 63 ponies which brings us up to 1493 ponies in total as we pass the 20th prompt. Nice work everyone!

Now the moment that all of our artists have been waiting for: Our second Makeup Day! I always am a fan of our sillier prompts as I never know what sort of comedy to expect, especially since our artists love to twist the meaning of the prompts as much as they can. As we enter into the final set of ten prompts for our artists, I wonder just what else we can expect by the end?

For today we managed to bring in 60 ponies which brings our total up to 1430 ponies. Nicely done everyone!

Since our second Makeup Day is just around the corner, I figured that it would be nice to end with a simpler prompt to help us all wind down a little beforehand. That's why for today I'd like you to Draw a pony enjoying a summer activity / Draw a pony feeling the heat.

While a lot of prompts near the end of the NATG are a bit more of a challenge to do, they can also be a fun and insightful way to see how others can interpret a harder prompt. With this one being about forging your destiny or experiencing a miracle you could get a glimpse into how an artist thinks, especially in how they define a miracle or destiny. It just brings out so much variety in the artwork.

For today we managed to bring in 58 ponies which brings us up to 1370 ponies in total!

Back to the lighthearted prompts for a bit everyone! Now that our ponies have experienced their destinies and the miracles of the world, it's time for something a bit more mundane and slice of life.  So that's why for today I would like you to Draw a pony daydreaming / Draw a pony with their head in the clouds.

As always you can find the submitter here.

Fear, self-doubt, sadness...Unfortunately, these are all things we have each felt at one point or another in our lives. If we are lucky, the feeling passes quickly but for others, it sticks with us and that can make life especially difficult. In some hobbies and professions, that doubt can rise even easier in the fast-paced world of social media and the internet at large. Numbers hold a powerful sway on our minds and we can't help but compare ourselves to what metrics say about us, those cold hard graphs, percentages, and numerals looking back at us. It can be hard to pull yourself out of such behaviors, but if you can focus on your work and find pride in it outside of what others think you're a step closer to being able to be free of the doubts that may weigh heavy on you. It's a road hard road, but it is worth every step you take.

For today we managed to bring in 62 ponies which brings us up to 1312 ponies in total. Nicely done everyone! Keep it up!

I think we've had enough of our sadder prompts, even our FiM ponies weren't at their wit's end forever and in the end there was always hope, something that pulled them from the darkness. So for a happier prompt today, I'd like you to Draw a pony experiencing a miracle / Draw a pony forging their own destiny.

As always you can find the submitter here.

I think we've all been in Zipp's situation where you just want to smack someone for taking up so much time over what seems to be a trivial decision. Frustration is something we all have to deal with, whether it is with ourselves or with those around us, it is how we deal with this frustration that makes all the difference. Do we face it head-on and power through it? Do we try and run from it or do we let it break us? That is what matters in the end.

For today's count of very frustrated ponies, we managed to bring in 63 ponies today which brings us up to 1250 ponies in total!

As for our next prompt, I want to keep us on the path of ponies not exactly having their best days because too often to we just keep our little pastel friends in happy slice-of-life scenarios. We have seen that in the show as well, where our ponies have to deal with things that aren't all that happy. So for today I'd like our artists to Draw a pony facing their worst nightmare / Draw a pony scared senseless.

As always you can find the submitter here.

You know, to someone in their 30s like me, it's interesting to see Minecraft have a resurgence in recent years. It was popular when pony was just coming out back when I was in college and now it has managed to take off to even greater heights since. Amazing how things shake out, no?

For today we managed a lovely 65 ponies which now brings us to 1187 ponies in total! Keep it up everyone, we're in the second half!

Now for our prompt, I thought of having this one right around today as way to help not only expression an emotion you all might not have had practice with, but a way to possibly vent your own exhaustion and frustration as well. The NATG is quite a marathon and is tiring for everyone involved and tensions can get high as the event drags on. That's why for today I'd like you all to Draw a pony being pushed to their limit / Draw a pony about to break.

As always you can find the submitter here.

When you're able to gather your courage and prepare yourself for whatever showdowns you have in your life there is nothing that can keep you down. Even if it ends in failure you can at least say you gave it your all and faced your fears and hopefully that can give you the determination to move forward and keep going! Press on, pony artists, we are halfway through the NATG now, you can make it to the end!

For today we managed to pull in 65 ponies which now brings us up to 1122 ponies in total! Nicely done everyone.

As we move into our 15th day of the NATG, it's time for a prompt that was originally created by Phoe when the NATG was young and is a tradition I keep going to this day. Ponies have been, since the beginning, crossed over with pretty much all media that is out there. While the phenomenon isn't as prevalent today as it was in the past it is still a tradition to 'ponify' things out there in the world so that's why today's prompt is to Draw a ponyfied version of your favorite book, game, ect / Draw a pony crossing over.

As always you can find the submitter here.

For our mobile friends trying to upload, try this:

Now that is one really strong donut if you can lift a whole unicorn with it! Speaking of fishing, today was an excellent example of when the prompt is taken in a completely different direction than I thought it would which is one of the great things about the NATG. While I did expect some fish puns, I did not expect so many different fish themes! One of those cases where a lot of you took the prompt quite literally to great effect, heh.

As for what we were able to reel in for today, we got 71 ponies which puts us at 1057 ponies in total meaning we finally passed the 1000 pony picture mark! Let's see if we can hit 2000!

While our ponies have their villains in their world they must also learn to be brave and prepare to protect their home. So as a complement to yesterday's prompt I want you all to Draw a pony preparing for a showdown / Draw a pony gathering their courage.

As always you can find the submitter here.
