The out of characterness and quickfix and SUPER CUTIE MARK DESTINY gimmick was a big gripe of mine. But it was clear Hasbro wanted it this way given how many things they want to focus on than building up the CMC or having one or two CMC feel jealous or bad of one of the other not getting theirs.

But whatever. It happened. And as much as I hate how they had to force a lot of things is just a means to an end for what probably would have taken them several episodes to properly build up to.

Cutie marks look like crap, and the lack of individualism is cheapened by how we never got to see them earn the marks in the way normal ponies realize their own destinies. I’m honestly hating my cutie mark magic affecting other ponies’ cutie mark destiny theory for these three actually came true. These cutie marks make me a bit sad when I first saw them. It was far too trite. Convoluted. No meaning behind the symbols in the middle of each, none. It’s just there to please the fans’ headcanon so they can just go ahead with the gimmick for keeping them around for future seasons.

I dunno. They could have gotten more unique cutie marks that better represented their new gifts and future Cutie Map style destiny. But nope. Music note. Caring Heart. Speedster.

All those three would have made for wonderful episodes of self-discovery. But instead we’re just forced to accept it at face value. That they have gained their individual talents despite their realization having nothing to do with those talents.

Lazy. Copout. By the book minimalistic lowest common denominator bad fanfic trope filled writing.

And yet, they managed to make it work. As much as my brain disagrees with how they went about giving them a new shared destiny super butt marks, my heart pretty much told it to shut the hell up because the episode was able to subvert many of those fanon tropes. Diamond in the end was more of a pony who willingly chose a side rather then come off as forced to choose. Lots of blink and you miss it telly parts that called back to many episodes in both Pony I Wanna Be and CMC’s final song.

The episode was beautiful. Songs were pretty. Story did well to close the chapter on these fillies destinies that all started with Diamond Tiara bringing them together to ending with Diamond Tiara. Lots of symbolism or implied symbolism.

Brain is too apathetic towards the episode. Disappointed. It enjoyed what the episode was trying to go for, the overall theme of it, but the execution. The heart was torn by the out of characterness of yanking and yelling at Silver Spoon but proved Silver always had a spine and never considered herself as anything but Diamond’s equal. It loved that the staff didn’t give the haters what they wanted with DT getting hit by the tether ball. It loved what it did for Diamond Tiara and how it brought the CMC and her and Spoon together.

This episode left me rather conflicted and broken for awhile. But overall it does far more good than bad. We may miss out on their discoveries, and it just feels ultra Sue’ish to give them BETTER and BIGGER cutie marks with BONUS TALENTS and near alicorn three way magic infusion powers might be something they can use later on to reveal super powers. Who knows. It was cheesy, but many people love cheese.

Episode far as brain is concerned was mediorce fanfiction tier of 5/10. If this were on Fimfiction it probably would have gotten 30 or 50 likes at best. Or overlooked entirely. Fans have been writing this stuff for years. Granted, most tend to end with Silver Spoon befriending the CMC and Diamond left to cry alone. So props to the show staff for subverting some of the Silver-fic tropes.

But the heart loved the buck out of this episode and rates it as a solid 10/10. Many feels much to enjoy. Lots of cheesy replay value. Though I never saw Diamond as ever wanting to be another pony, I can totally see her wishing she had a better mommy.

Somewhat TL;DR:

I too feel the CMC got cheated. Anything in S6 will mostly be showing off Scoots probably having been ‘healed’ by the magic infusion of having more magic now to fly like normal pegasi. Quick fix for everything, just watch. Everything will be hoodinied and it will have been given to the CMC and not something they actually earned. Like DT said in teh comic, they can do no wrong because the universe will always side with them. That is the power of being a protagonist. At least now DT has protagonist access now. Confirmed for S6 so Filly 5(+?) totally canon now.

Not really. Look a little closer. The cutie marks aren’t all identical. Similar, yes, but not the same:
full

Apple Bloom gets an apple and a heart, symbolizing her bond with her family and their business.

Sweetie Belle has a star and a music note, representing her musical talent and ability to perform.

Scootaloo gets a wing and a lightning bolt, showing her affinity for high-speed stunts.

All of their individual talents are there. The similarity is a bit weird, yes, but there’s a reason for it. It’s not just “being the CMC”; that’s a huge understatement. The core thing that binds them all together is their desire to help others, including each other, find their places in the world. Their CMs don’t represent only their talents, but what they want to accomplish with those talents. It’s a recurring theme to the season that there’s more to cutie marks than just a skill. It’s an expression of their whole personality, not just what they’re good at, but what they want to use their abilities to do. And the CMC were always aimless, aiming to get their marks solely for the sake of getting their marks. They got them in this episode because they finally looked past getting the marks for the sake of it and began to think about what they could use their skills for.

Yeah, the episode has its fair share of issues and it’s far from perfect, but their talent is far from “empty” and it’s very much thematically appropriate. The whole theme of the season is cutie marks and how they reflect on the abilities and personalities of the ponies who have them. And given how much the CMC value their friendship I don’t think it’s all that surprising that their marks would reflect that.

Now, I’m not saying that you have to like the direction that the show took the concept, just that I think it’s pretty clear that they put more thought into this decision than it looks like at first.

Scootaloo finally gets a cutie mark. Gets hidden from view by her wings majority of the time.

Well, good thing pegasi wings to body ratio short of being an alicorn tend to not be that big when furled to their sides.

well actually their cutie marks mean that their special talent is helping people learn the deeper meaning behind each own’s cutie mark

the ponies they have helped so far already had cutie marks but the problem was they were approaching them the wrong way :)
yeah, it was rushed and i disliked Twilight’s princess episode too :P
RealityCheck

I’m in tears for a different reason. Forget their actual talents— builder, musician, and athlete…. to heck with literal years of character development, and screw that whole individuality thing— their cutie mark is for… being cutie mark crusaders.

Yay, now they have one empty talent to share between them! And they’re now magically attached at the ass, forever. So much for those dreams you had, kids.

Now I know what it’s like getting a wish granted by a Jackass Genie. This HAD to have been written by the same smacktards that screwed up Twilight’s ascension, it has all the same craptacular features: wall-to-wall eye-rollingly bad musical numbers, a ridiculous quick-fix conflict, magic that’s completely out of canon with the rest of the dang show, and a ‘destiny’ that completely ignores every single thing about the characters it’s inflicted on.
