It’s like they have two talents.  
The shield represents the crusader’s oath.  
The images within the shields represents their individual talents.
 
The only problem I had with them is the size. They look rather small.

I’ll add some extra analysis.
 
The shield: stands for defense or helping those who need help aka helping others gain cutie marks or reaffirming their talents (like Trouble Shoes and now DT)
 
The colors: Their primary mane colors. Basically they’re friends for life with their destinies “joined at the hip”, pun intended.

Quoting here ng. Apple Bloom gets an apple with a heart in it, perhaps representing her strong spirit or loving nature. Sweetie Belle gets a musical note in a star, representing her strong musical talent and destiny for fame. Scootaloo, interestingly, gets a winged lightning bolt, showing her linkage with Rainbow Dash and perhaps showing she’s going to be a strong flier (the wing on that mark is a huge) wing by Pegasus standards. unquote.
