I wonder what won over priority over Celestia?
I guess neither Hasbro nor DHX wanted to show the horrors of a nightmare ruler in the show, so vague references will have to suffice, like it or not. I do see what you’re saying about why she punishes herself, and why Celestia didn’t need to be in this episode. Looking back at episode 1, that moment where she makes amends with her sister was the denouement, so that’s over and done with. I guess I’m just not satisfied with the show anymore, but I like it enough to keep watching. The last really good episode for me was Slice of Life.
On the subject of Luna’s absence in Canterlot Wedding: I remember reading somewhere that Meghan McCarthy admitted that she had honestly completely forgotten that Luna even existed when she was originally writing A Canterlot Wedding and added Luna’s few lines of dialogue at pretty much the last minute. I probably wouldn’t be able to find anything outright confirming this, though.

I will disagree quite strongly with you on that point; Luna’s absence remains the one indelible stain on what was for me an otherwise nearly perfect season finale. That’s not to say there aren’t any other enduring valid criticisms– boy howdy Cadance and Shiny could have been introduced a lot better– and it’s not overly difficult to headcanon as making sense if you assume there was a LOT of action offscreen, but from a storytelling standpoint it was like a huge speedbump in the middle of a Formula 1 racetrack.

That’s another situation where it seems obvious to me that there was a lot more going on than we saw in the
drug-induced hallucinationflashbacks of the Season 4 Premiere; it’s all headcanon unless it gets addressed onscreen, of course, but I definitely got the impression that we were shown a heavily-condensed version of the events only as they related to The Sisters’ conflict, and Luna’s constant refrain of All The Horrors I Caused from this episode implies pretty strongly that there were some, um, actual horrors going on. To me it was a character-building feature that showed she had made peace with her sister so completely that her betrayal and banishment weren’t even a major stumbling block for her any more, and the fact that all of those Equestrian subjects from a thousand+ years ago are no longer capable of the same reconciliation is the primary source of her guilt. She can make amends with Celestia, but that will never happen for anypony else she hurt in the past, and that’s exactly why she felt the need to flagellate herself every day in her dreams.I still think that including Celestia would have been a mistake, and one that would have helped perpetuate keeping Luna under her shadow; this was a fight Luna was having with herself, and dragging in a former enemy who has absolutely and unambiguously become an ally once more would have made about as much sense as formally dragging England into an internal U.S. debate about Native American reservations.
I don’t think Celestia being in the episode would have meant making it about how Luna can’t grow as a character without her sister. The question had more to do with who she hurt and why she feels sorry. Maybe it would’ve made more sense if Nightmare Moon did any terrorizing or subjugation before being banished, but even then, those ponies would have been long gone by the time she returned. Celestia, however, would still be around.
That being said, I don’t feel the episode needs to be changed dramatically, like replacing the Mane 6 +Spike with Celestia. Viable, but not necessary. If anything I would’ve had her say something about her sister in the end, or show a wordless flashback and not change the script. It’s just that, for better or worse, her absence was very noticeable. Even moreso than Luna’s relative absence in A Canterlot Wedding.
Well, the leaked episode list has gotten the first half of the season completely right (though I doubt that the summaries are actually true)…
Unfortunately, the ~LEAKED~ episode list– if it’s accurate– doesn’t include any titles that really jump out as Royal Sisters episodes, except possibly Hearthbreakers.
A full episode for those two would be good.

Oh no, I’ve never had any shyness about pointing out the fact that he really does have an odd fondness for jumping into the comments on the unambiguously racist images he pretends don’t exist and arguing that they’re not really racist; he also takes great delight in cherrypicking, handwaving, and outright fabrication in support of the blatantly falsified official police versions of events where racist cops in the USA murder unarmed Black teenagers. I don’t recall him saying or implying that at all. His actual argument seems to be that, since works of art can convey the mindset and beliefs of their artist, it’s entirely possible for a work of art to be racist. I haven’t seen him say anything that could be interpreted as accusing you personally of racism, only of disagreeing with him on this point.

I would still rather have that be the focus of an entire episode, though, rather than trying to wedge it in as a subplot in another story; I just feel like their relationship is too important for a third act interjection. I’m right there with you though on it being long past time for them to have a focus episode as sisters, and for Celestia to (finally) get an episode of her own.
