The receiver would explode if you did that. They just remove the projectile from the bullet casing but leave the powder, it gives off the effect a bullet was fired when really it’s just the powder igniting.

It is, but I can hardly believe the directors would settle for such a terrible toy looking fake, especially when they must had access to the studio’s prop department.  
I should look up the actual scene somewhere.

Stopped caring
Looks like a real Smith & Wesson 36 to me. I haven’t seen this in a long time, but I think this is the scene where Marge shoots Peter Stormare in the leg when he tries to run, so might be discharge coming out of the barrel.
