While I understand the meaning behind this, and it was clearly unintentional on Derpy’s part, it is a shame Pinkie didn’t get to make it, since she was the one who helped Matilda and Cranky find each other in the end.

I have this impression that since the Mane 6 are the main characters of the show, wherever they happen to be, the show happens around them. So if they were to go to the wedding, the focus would shift away from the ceremony itself, and would center around whatever it is they were doing there at the time.
 
I imagine in this way, the Mane 6 are similar to the Greendale Seven from “Community”, where the show hinges around everything they do, and the world around them resents them for always taking the focus away from their own lives.
