Larson said at the con that this was a request from Hasbro and that he didn’t want to do it originally but ended up with it after another writer didn’t do it. Hasbro wanted it to pander to bronies, according to their view of pandering.

Not terribly surprising; to some extent, the show is a toy commercial, so it isn’t terribly surprising they’d be trying to sell toys to one of their major markets.

From what I understand, they where pretty much “told” to do a brony-pandering episode by the higher-ups, so they decided to a: turn it up to 11 and b: make fun of it at the same time.

Why did they have to be “told”? What makes you so sure they didn’t think of this off their own backs?
This episode is clearly a love letter to the fans from everyone involved, so give Larson some credit and assume he wasn’t simply ordered to write this.

Best Happy Days reference ever. The Fonz lives on through ponies. Thanks, M.A. Larson

They should have done this the moment they gave Twilight wings. And turned it into a running gag where every time Twilight is on-screen, a shark can be seen somewhere.
