I think you’ll find, if you look it up, that the UN sets out the right to marry (Article 16) before the right to work (Article 23). Now, the Universal Declaration on Human Rights isn’t legally binding, but it’s a pretty good authority on what’s generally considered a right. I mean, I would agree that sustenance and freedom from persecution and stuff are generally a little bit more critical than the right to marry, but the right to marry is at least on the level of the right to work.

Too bad marriage isn’t a basic human right. I wish I had the right to marry anyone who would consent, but there’s still restrictions because it isn’t on the same level as actual basic human rights (food, water, shelter, able to get a job)

That could have done with a citation, but I found the studies (one by National Violence Against Women, one by the CDC), and they both refer to “intimate partners” which doesn’t specify marriage, and given that these surveys were conducted in the USA around 2010, most of the LGBT participants were likely not married. So saying that allowing lesbians to marry makes them more vulnerable to domestic violence is misleading. Being LGBT is a risk factor, likely because many LGBT people grow up under conditions of fear, confusion and uncertainty, which tends to fuck you up, which means that to fix this we should treat them more like human beings, not less. It’s almost like giving people their basic human rights is a good thing.

@moonchosen
It statistically leads to more domestic violence compared to actual marriage.

Also polygamy is illegal for the same way, which isn’t fair for those lgbt people.

I would to tell all of you that it doesn’t matter who you marry,either if it’s a Catholic or Protestant,Black or white,We are all humans on this earth and in Ireland (where I’m from) I would just tell the government that if these people want to get married then let them marry and let Ireland be known as the greatest democracy that it is by allowing equal marriage to occur.

seems ireland brought the topic back here in germany as well…maybe they managed to start a small chain reaction, let’s see where it goes. at least until the next big thing is in the news and everyone forgets about it again

It’s hard to believe that my own Ireland, a country that didn’t decriminalise homosexuality until 1993, has become the first country ever to pass same-sex marriage by popular vote. There’s a saying about little acorns and mighty oaks in there.

Possibly the vote was rigged, I don’t believe that the Irish people would approve of this nonsense.

It was a 33 vote difference 50.05 voted yes.
Still a very long way to go. The population is still pretty much divided on this vote between young and old or Religious and not.

People already want a recount, arseholes.

I am happy to see there is some progression though even in an elderly and religious population like this.
