Necropost, but so be it.
The way I see it, Katarn was a much more emotionally mature person than most of the Jedi when he received his powers and that was crucial in his path. He walked the line multiple times, but never crossed it. And thus he exposes a major flaw in the pre-empire Jedi Temple methods of teaching: they were teaching the kids that never really understood what kind of power rested in their hands. Anakin was an edge case that really drove the point (along with the legion of storm troopers) home – the reason he turned dark was basically because that was his coping method. Which is exactly what the Luke was referring when he told that “there is good in him” – under his armor he remained the same teenage boy, that was hurt, was denied something he wanted, and knew no other way of dealing with it than becoming oh so very mad. He never grew up, and Luke was more emotionally mature than him. Which is why he managed to beat Emperor at his game. Was a mighty close call though.
Katarn is the same. He’s been through shit, graduated from the school of hard knocks with honours, so he knows that life is not over when shit happens and even if someone close – very close to him dies at the hands of enemy. And, it seems, they practice the same approach in the newly founded Jedi Academy – the students are sent into the world to solve real problems beginning from the first year of education, and the age at which they are taken into academy is increased (from the beginning of Jedi Academy game I’d say either late teens, or young adults – compare and contrast with pre-Empire temple, where we routinely see kids).
BTW this whole thing very nicely ties in with the idea that Force abilities are much more about a proper mindset and training rather then simply nanomachines midichlorians. Which is the idea that prevailed through the original trilogy, and IMHO, has much bigger potential.

Darth Sun is the leader of the Alicorn Sith and without a doubt the strongest among them. Despite this she is rather hands-off and prefers to test potential victims and play them into her hands.

Nice. I remember I brought up this conversation as well a while back.

As far as powerful Jedi’s that went through a complex and troubled journey to find their balance, Revan and the Exile’s similar but different paths and personalities reminds me a lot of Sunset and Luna’s paths respectively. Especially in the way Kreia described the both of them.

People like Kyle Katarn and Jolee Bindo were both considered ‘Grey’ Jedi, ones who eventually struck a very balanced and relatable understanding of the force, not without their highs and lows, but not rejecting any of the negative or relatable emotions that made them human. Very casual, rogue-like heroes, but intense as any human. I can’t help but imagine Rainbow Dash in the kind of role Kyle Katarn has.

Its hard to categorize Luke’s strength through the dark side cause besides his falls and resists of it, it only mentions that he was ‘stronger’ after he fell the last time and became a jedi master, but it was hard to categorize his personality after that. Jaden’s dabbling in the dark side and issue bordering it mostly came from his repression. He wasn’t ‘dark’, he just was not being honest about what bothered him and it kept building. I think the problem was Kyle taught him to use both sides of the force and just act upon his instincts to use both well, but Jaden just didn’t have the casual attitude that Kyle had and it nearly backfired when he couldn’t let things go.

I don’t know much about Kreia’s past but she seemed obsessed with the strength of both from the very beginning. She was so ‘balanced’ between light and dark she didn’t really care who won either way, good or evil.

Ah, knew I forgot someone.

Also, Katarn nearly fell to the dark side TWICE and one time when he actually did! Once after he killed Maw out of anger (Dark Forces II), the second when he was seduced by the temple on Dromund Kaas and nearly killed Mara Jade (Mysteries Of The Sith) and the third when he nearly dropped Tavion to her death because he thought she killed Jan Ors (Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast).

All three times, he was able to let go of his anger. In the first case, he couldn’t use his dark side abilities anymore but that was due to game mechanics. The second was him giving up his powers after nearly killing a friend of his, hence why in Jedi Outcast he starts off as a regular person before getting his powers back.

Not to mention, Katarn said this: “Remember, abilities aren’t inherently good or evil… it’s how you use them”

He knows with plenty of experience that, no matter how far you go to the dark side, you can still be pulled back from it. Also goes to show that he understands that it’s the user, not the ablility, that can be the reason it’s good or evil.

TL;DR Kyle Katarn can use a shit ton of dark side powers and still be good, he just needs to keep a close eye on himself.

You forgot Kreia/Darth Traya.
Also, “balance” is more than using Force Choke or Force Lightning a few times, so Korr or Katarn hardly qualify. Katarn to a bigger extent perhaps.
Balance is a philosophy at the core of which is realisation that both Ashla and Bohan torn from their counterpart are flawed and won’t persist.

@Cloudstrider
Uh, the true way of the force is balance between the two sides. You can’t have too much light without dark and vice versa.

Examples of this (Some of these aren’t canon anymore but fuck Disney):

Jolee Bindo
Revan
The Exile (I refuse to use the name, Meetra Surik, there’s a reason why she’s known as “The Exile”)
Kyle Katarn
Jaden Korr
Luke Skywalker (He did use Force Choke against two guards in Return of The Jedi)

According to THAT particular account, apparently so. Then again, according to other books the whole Rule of Two was never used by what seems to have been a veritable horde of ‘other’ would-be Sith groups in the galaxy.

“No.”

“Its a pony legend most would not tell you. Darth Solaris, was a Dark Princess of Chaos so wise, and so powerful, that she could even stop the ones she cared about…from dying. She grew so powerful, that the only thing she was afraid of was losing her power, which of course she did. Unfortunately she taught her pupil everything she knew…and then her pupil killed her in her sleep. It’s ironic…she could save others from death, but not herself.”

“Is it possible to learn this power?”

“Not from a regular pony.”

Yes, though in the recent ‘Book of the Sith’ they had a section by Darth Bane where he suggests that future Sith Lords have several students without them being formal apprentices, so as to play them off of each other and finally have one kill the others to prove they deserve to be the ‘real’ apprentice. Which, given what we get told about Bane’s background, makes very little sense.
