Hey, if Barbarian tribes can learn magic, I’m sure the non-unicorns can find a way to cast from a spell book. If it was possible to mod it such a way, it would be neat to see each hero have a different casting animation.

Yep, it sounds 20% cooler than my idea.  
There is still a question - how some equine race should use magic book w/o horn… But, hey! - Octavia hired in Inferno, playing the inferno theme on cello and casting the “sorrow” spell on enemies… That would be just awesome, right?!

I could see the mane six’s homes being the buildings you need to build/upgrade for units. I just think the mane six themselves should be heroes whose specialization would be to the unit that gets created in their home.
 
AJ has a specialty for Earth ponies/Farm ponies that get created for having Sweet Apple Acres for instance. Other ponies/characters would have their own hero specialty instead.

Well in theory this makes the HOMM modmaker’s job significally more complex: Everypony in m6 should be responsible for their own city then. For example Twi-Tower, Rarity-Castle, AJ-Stronghold, Fluttershy - Conflux/Fortress (or Rampart with pegasus/unicorn units, lol). No idea for RD & PP however… Maybe evil characters are the best choice for the rest? I mean Terek for inferno, Diamond dogs - dungeon, Chrysalis - Necrop… sorry, @SingleCrystal - Metamorpolis of course.  
Anyway - turning the only one town into Ponyville technically should be much easier :P
