Velvet, be reasonable. You can’t treat Spike like some kind of dog.
I mean, you can’t make a dog organize a library. Do you think Winona knows how to read? Sheesh.
Evowizard25

Yes, be racist against a sapiant being that has saved your daughter, your son, your daughter-in law, an entire kingdom and is praised in said kingdom to such heights that he’s basically a living legend.

sigh Why Velvet? Why make her racist? The only point is to make her seem like a bad pony, when she’s not. This is the point someone’s going to throw in my face that she doesn’t have a personality, well, she does appear in a scene in the Neigh Anything comic. She was shown to be a loving and doting sort of mother. Hence why she and her husband got her into the institute, since she really wanted to go there.

Yes, that doesn’t denote specism, but to that extent? To a being practically her own daughter’s son/brother. {I personally go with the brother allegory, given Twilight’s age.} This is simply a ploy to have the audience hate her. It adds nothing and…sigh No, that’s it. It adds nothing.

You know what did this better? The comic with Spike/Luna in the dragon town. With that inspector that was clearly speciest, even calling out Luna for bringing a dragon along. He’s pretty much a minority and even the other cops think he’s annoying because of it, so speciesm seems to be rather rare. {And in the show, no one really thinks twice about other species coming and going and treat them fairly.} As well, the guy gets over his speciesm the moment the dragons come to help, so ponies are honestly a very forgiving and loving species.

Hey there, as the author I understand your concern about Celestia but I think you may have taken her decision to not help incorrectly as it was never my intention to portray her as evil. Rather I was hoping to show that while Celestia is a kind and benevolent ruler, she is first and foremost a ruler with a responsibility to her ponies.

Her decision to not act is based on if she were to openly defy the Griffons who intend to use them, who also play a major part in defending her lands from other countries. It would very much so spell out the end of Equestria.

The best sort of comparison I could give you would be North Korea. North Korea wants to do a lot of things, for example, I’m almost positive they want to nuke the crap out of South Korea. But they don’t because China tells them not to. Without China, North Korea is extremely vulnerable and I’m fairly certain the U.S. and a multitude of other countries would roll over them with no problems.

In this instance, Equestria is like North Korea and the Griffons are like China. To go against the griffons would put Equestria in a heap of danger on multiple fronts. First, the griffons could choose not to help defend them if another country was to attack. Two, they could attack themselves, possibly using this nuclear weapon that they have come in possession of against Equestria.

So this being the case,Celestia is stuck between a rock and hard place. A regular damned if you do, damned if you don’t scenario. In the end,she made her decision because she values the lives of the ponies she protects over Dragons which are currently seen throughout the world as a bit of a menace.

This is not an evil Celestia, it’s a Celestia with a job to do.

The latest chapter involves Celestia approving the use of Nuclear Weapons in a campaign of genocide against the Dragon Lands.

She is not being presented as an evil version of herself.

As a Celestia fan, you can understand why this upsets me.

Well that’s certain one way to look at it.

But that’s the beauty of having a different opinion. All of those examples can be seen in a different light, which allows for different stories to be told For example:

Twilight being told to smile, maybe not have had such sweet connotations. What if Twi’s parents pulled a lot of strings either with money or political connections to get her into that school. And they didn’t want Twilight embarrassing them. Seeing her begin to freak out might have warranted an overbearing parent that expects her daughter to perform to tell her to smile to help save face. Very much like those crazy mothers of little girl pageants.

They soon seems to already have been groomed since birth to Captain of the Royal Guard, plus it would seem Cadence had a thing for him. What if the parents, to further cement their, as well as their bloodlines place in the aristocracy of Canterlot, pressured Shining into the sealing the deal with Cadence. And upon learning that Twilight had an aptitude for Magic, began pushing her to study and study harder so she would be able to get into the school for gifted unicorns. It may be why she developed her study habits and had such a lack of friends perhaps her parents forced her at a young age to do nothing but study and study to get her into good graces with the princess, to once again but them in better position with the Canterlot Elite.

That’s the glory of imagination and having such little to work with, you allow for people to view things differently and thus have a not so cut and dry super kid friendly atmosphere that the show portrays.

“pushing Twilight to study for the entrance exam into Celestia’s school (despite Twilight having nearly-zero magic ability at the time)”

Pushing? Twilight had interest in magic thanks to seeing Celestia at the Summer Sun Celebration, and started to study it. She is super excited when she sees her parents enrolled her in Celestia’s school.

During the exam her parents told her to smile because she was nervous and that was holding her back. And as Celestia said, she had more raw magical ability than any other unicorn she had ever seen, she just needed much work to gain control over it.

Even if they aren’t much, these small moments paint Twilight Velvet as nice and supportive of her kids.

a writer and/or artist can give T.Velvet any personality they want. Considering that, as I have mentioned before, Twilight Velvet lives in Canterlot and is likely very upper-class, she might be kind of a bitch. Makes sense considering every other Canterlot Unicorn we’ve seen (except one) has been a total prat.

That’s true, but a writer can only go so far before pushing the limit of what’s IC. For Twilight Velvet to treat Spike like an animal simply because he’s not a pony implies that she’s not just a bitch, but a serious racist as well. Now, Canterlot unicorns appear to be snobs and ponies in general seem to be a bit xenophobic, but overt racism like this goes well beyond what we’ve seen. It’s pushing the boundaries of what’s acceptable in Equestrian society, and thus our boundaries for IC/OOC behavior. And remember, this is a kid’s show, so anything that isn’t well within modern social norms is going to be OOC.

Your point is solid, but I also dertimed that the MLP world is wonky at best with how it wants to handle things and is very prone to altering things to fit comedic purposes. Such as Spike being treated like a dog despite his sentience when he went to the vet. (Only for him to respond in kind)

This being the case, I think I can be flexible with how I want to go about handling it.

As for what about the other dragons/kobayshi-mare style test. It could be handled in many ways, perhaps their are other dragons assigned to unicorns, maybe we just haven’t been introduced. Perhaps most set them them free but Twilight simply was too attached. There are a ton of ways it can be explained because the show is vague regarding it.

But I have to ask, at the tail end of your comment are you inferring that Twilight unwittingly created life from nothing? I would argue that is a tad bit more power than I think one should give her.

Forgive me for the following rant, but I can’t let this one go:

By your argument, there should be baby dragons everywhere, one for every student admitted into Celestia’s academy. Unless the ponies are slaughtering them shortly after hatching, we should’ve seen at least one other in Canterlot. We don’t. Spike is an anomaly.

Furthermore, we’ve seen that Spike is as respected as Twilight in many respects. In “Look Before You Sleep,” he’s the one on official business for the princess. In “Suited For Success,” he’s the one with connections in the fashion industry, getting Hoity Toity to come see Rarity’s fashion show. And we’ve seen how the Crystal Empire treats him.

You’re working off of one data point and trying to extrapolate an entire trend out of it. I admit that that’s done rather frequently in this fandom, but the other consequences of your hypothesis aren’t there. No other dragons. No enraged dragon parents. No accusations by the dragons the Mane Six have encountered of pony egg thievery. (Unless you’re suggesting that dragons are voluntarily sending their children to their deaths.) And somehow, I doubt Celestia would approve of Velvet abusing one of her heralds thusly.

Bear in mind what it took for Twilight to hatch the egg. It’s entirely possible that the test was a Kobayashi Maru-style unwinnable scenario, designed to test how students deal with failure. The egg might have been a dud. It might have been unfertilized. It might have been a painted rock. Given what else Twilight did, is it so hard to believe that she turned a fake into the real thing before hatching it? (And before you point out that Spike didn’t cease to exist when the surge ended, the egg didn’t unhatch either.)

@whitemew

I’m not sure how well him being sentient holds up in the world of MLP for multiple reasons. First, we have seen first hand that Apple Jack treated the farm animals like farm animals despite the fact that they can talk. If I recall, she had herded only for one cow to claim ‘You could have just asked.” At which point Apple Jack merely slammed the gate on them.

Plus, we have to question what level citizenship is granted to Spike. Consider this, his very birth calls into question how well they treat dragons. He was part of trial for adolescent unicorns to see how talented they were. I think it is safe to assume that the poines clearly harvest dragon eggs for such a thing, and plus, we must wonder how many baby dragons die because a child unicorn isn’t as adept at magic as Twilight.

This carelessness certain allows for me to have some merit regarding their position in pony society.
Gunflame345

@FanOfMostEverything
While I can’t outright claim nannies were part of Twilight’s and quite possible Shining’s upbringing. I think we can assume a certain level of distance by her parents having Cadence as Twilight’s foal sitter.

Again, I admit it is nothing concrete, but it is most certainly something that I can choose to run with for the sake of entertaiment.

Howdy, author here, I can’t help but notice that you claimed Cadence is a tad OOC in my story. This is most certainly the case, which I glad to say that I’m happy you picked up on.

The reason she is acting widely out of character for the majority of my story/stories is because she has been discorded. I’m not sure what portions you may have read, but this information was basically spoon fed to the reader at the end of the first story. Hopefully, it explains why she acting Out of Character and not simply because I wanted to to depict her as a mean character.

The thing is, we haven’t seen Twilight Velvet do much of anything directly, but she does have two children. Granted, this version of her works if you assume nannies actually raised them, but you’d think some degree of her behavior would’ve rubbed off on her kids.

You have a point, we don’t know what she is like. But in every part of this story I’ve read, every character is behaving wildly OOC. No one is anything like we’ve seen in the show, the author has changed everything. Then there are gems like >>551771 (read my comment there). Plus it is a Sonic crossover.

Maybe if you can get around the OOC and Sonic stuff, maybe there’s something passable buried in there. I don’t know.

How can anyone claim Out-Of-Character on a character who has no character?

What does the Almighty Canon™ say about Twilight Velvet? Almost nothing. She never spoke, and the only direct action we saw her take was joining Night Light in pushing Twilight to study for the entrance exam into Celestia’s school (despite Twilight having nearly-zero magic ability at the time), and then telling Twilight to smile for her proctors. Years later she appeared at Twilicorn’s coronation being the proud mother. She has a blindbag toy, but I don’t know what its card says.

Thus, even if AU isn’t in effect, a writer and/or artist can give T.Velvet any personality they want. Considering that, as I have mentioned before, Twilight Velvet lives in Canterlot and is likely very upper-class, she might be kind of a bitch. Makes sense considering every other Canterlot Unicorn we’ve seen (except one) has been a total prat.

Personally, I like Twilight Velvet (more than her daughter) and currently headcanon her as a closet-dork. Maybe a writer.
