This stirred up some weird drama in the derpibooru comments, so for the record: This is just a misunderstanding and Luna being a proper sister and teasing Celestia. No bashing or hating.”

Personally, the “lingering issue with Celestia” might still be present; it’s kind of obvious why she visited Sweetie Belle when Sweetie was feeling jealous of seemingly being in Rarity’s shadow.

Hrm. Well, I said I wouldn’t comment any more, but that was under the presupposition that any further comments would necessarily be drama. And since I think I can avoid inciting such, here goes…

First things first, tip for future posts: Using >> and the image number in a comment gets converted to a link to the image with that number; or, to use your image as an example, >>357174.

Anyway, it looks like this is less a case of loving Luna’s S1 characterization (which, I’d say, was next to none) than loving the potential for the character, and being disappointed it wasn’t followed up on. Personally, I enjoyed “royal large ham” Luna in “Luna Eclipsed”, but that’s a matter of taste and I won’t disparage someone for disagreeing. And I do wholeheartedly agree that Lauren Faust’s original plans for Luna to have “a lingering issue with Celestia” due to feeling “in her sister’s shadow” would be a terrific concept for the series to explore; given how little we’ve seen Luna (and especially how little we’ve seen of her with Celestia), I think and hope it could still be done.

And one stray thought, about Luna’s dreamwalking: perhaps that’s something she only learned to do after she returned?

Alright, I’ll chime in one last time, because this comment kinda pissed me off.
You insult me and put words in my mouth, then go into great detail on why I’m right? Have some consistency, please! This is actually a very insightful comment you wrote, but you spoiled it by having such a mean-spirited attitude towards someone that AGREES with you 100 percent, and why?–because I don’t feel like writing a giant tl;dr comment explaining myself for the umpteenth time?
Anyway, it’s good to see someone who appreciates what could have been for Luna, and has put a good deal of thought into their position. Keep on going on, fellow S1 Luna-tic.

Its not inconsistency. I am commenting on you attitude and am NOT putting words into your mouth. You are literally saying what you feel then saying “Just got back from vacation and wanted to stop by and say I’m not commenting any further on any of this crap. It’s just not worth it, at all. I’ll just say that Luna had the potential to actually amount to something in S1” and then end it with “Will not respond to any further comments ITT.”

Its not a matter of inconsistency, its a matter of calling you out on your attitude. I can agree with you general statement that Luna is a lot of missed potential without agreeing on the stance and attitude you took with it. That’s not a consistency issue, thats having a different opinion on how to go about a discussion. If you honestly did not want to continue the discussion you would not have made that post or the follow up reply :T

I am more than happy to discuss S1 Luna and I am sorry that my comment pissed you off, but thats honestly how your comment came off as.

@Jarkes
Yeah, about that… “Luna Eclipsed” was one of two Season 2 episodes that Faust had the most involvement in (the other being “Hearth’s Warming Eve”). So that episode WAS part of her plans.

According to the interview on EQD…

http://www.equestriadaily.com/2013/05/lauren-faust-answers-bunch-of-questions.html

She only did script work on the first half, but you are right that she had involvement in the episode. I can admit that MAYBE this is the path she wanted to take Twilight but with later interviews, like the one Rubber Johnny posted, it always feels like things took a route different than what was planned. You have to remember that in S2 she was more advisory than lead director of the show.

A good example being, again just as an example, DBZ to DBGT. Toei Animation wanted more DBZ after the Manga/Anime ended so they made the DBGT Anime with Toriyama in an advisory role and giving his blessing. He did a few character designs, such as sjj4, and gave some advice but for the most part he just advised when asked and had no real involvement with the series. That was basically what Lauren’s role in S2 became, she had stepped down from leading the project and helped when required. As the interview states she was more involved with some episodes than others but it was minimal.

She helped write the first half of the script for Luna Eclipsed but you have to take into account that the first half vs the full final draft are two very different things. Again going back to interviews where she had stated her plans for the characters and series being different than her originally planned vision. A good interview, though overused and the fuel of much debate, is the “Bronies” extended interview disc. She mentions a lot of her plans for the series that still have not come to be, Twilight being an Alicorn now being one of the few things she lists having come to fruition.

I am not Lauren Faust and really, even trying to argue S1 Luna, I wont put words in her mouth but I will consider outside sources such as the S2 staff and Hasbro. She helped write the first half of the episode, you are right, so I will admit that maybe Luna turned out as she wanted. I would honestly be disappointed if what we have for Luna is her vision because it seems pretty poor to me, but I will admit I was wrong in my original statement if thats the case and you bring up a good and valid point Jarkes.

So… basically…

“My opinion is all that matters! I don’t care what any of you say, I can”t hear you, la la la la!”?

Don’t get me wrong, I think the brief appearance of S1 Luna we had has 100x more personality than all of S2+ does. She did not have a silly gimmick (spoke normally as NMM and Luna), She had a much more unique design rather than coming off more as “Princess Celestia Nighttime Edition”, and just going from what we knew she had a much more brash look to her and a much less “princess-ish” vibe. She was the more energetic, less prissy, adventurous sister in my eyes (The last bit being opinion and possible reading too much into the character).

She had so much potential to be so much more unique, honestly the book “Journal of the Two Sisters” does a better job with her. She is a fighter, she loves to design traps and secrets(ie the castle of the two sisters traps all being her idea), she just has a much less royal vibe. In S2 when she came back she suddenly, out of nowhere, had the “royal we” gimmick and became a stuck up nobility way out of her time. It just did not feel right. I mean she was still brash (NO MORE NIGHTMARE NIGHT!) to an extent but it felt wrong.

I feel IDW has picked up some of the pace with the character and given her a TON more emotion and character than the show. The show just continues to go off gimmicks, now with the whole “She watches over dreams” bit. If she is constantly looking through ponies dreams then what grounds even started the whole “No one cares about my beautiful night” if she herself is just going though dreams?

The character feels like it has no consistency from the original idea of Luna because so much about her just feels, to me, wrong and does not fit with what we originally saw.

This may just be paranoid, tin foil hat, baseless talk, but I wonder how much Hasbro and us viewers caused this? On Hasbro’s side I wonder if it was easier to just re-skin Celestia into a Luna toy so they pushed for the change. On our side, back in S1 a HUGE portion of the fandom drew pictures of Luna with an Abacus and trying to adapt to the modern Equestria. It makes me wonder if the writing staff payed too much attention to us and thats why she ended up so gimmicky with the “royal we” dialect. They saw what fans were doing with Luna, making stories and images of her adapting to a world that moved ahead of her by 1000 years and left her in the dust and tried to appease the fans by that. If so, it was absolutely the wrong way.

Another thing that bothers me is the S2 episode in general. How good of a big sister is Celestia that she wanted ponies to remember her little sister as nothing more than a monster? She is the Princess and she could have stopped Nightmare Night, a literal celebration of everything bad about her sister, from becoming a real thing. She could have set up a remembrance holiday for her sister and tried to remind ponies about the good in her, but instead she allows a holiday that literally spits in Luna’s face to become a thing?

I know its a “kids” show, and I use the word loosely, but some of the writing is just… bad and really just throws a character that had so much potential like Luna under the bus.

shrug

Whats done is done and honestly, the current Luna is not overly bad. I think IDW does a much better job giving her actual character than the show, but who knows what the future holds. Hasbro knee jerks far too much and I feel Luna is in the same boat as Ditzy Doo and will just remain a mostly background character that only gets used once in a while in an overly gimmicky way. I really would have loved to see what Faust had originally planned to be fully realized but I doubt we will ever see that.

Not gonna argue about this for the umpteenth time. Will not respond to any further comments ITT. For the love of fuck just let this end.

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

I think this is really really funny. Having family members who are holier then thou and who fight with each other I know of one instance where someone adopted 2 kids, then had her own and a family member asked who the father of the other 2 were. It was… awkward.
