Description

What if Celestia knew what fandom is doing to her? Here’s my opinion on it. Back on Ponibooru, this triggered an impressive discussion.

Huh. With the track record this site has, I was expecting downvotes galore because everyone has such an astounding hate for anything anti-molestia.

We tease because we care, Celestia. Take our opinion with a grain of salt. I like you, but that doesn’t mean I can’t make fun. Hell, my friends and I tease each other all the time. And if you knew me like I knew you, I bet you’d tease me just as much as I tease you. Y’know why? Because I care. We all care about you, Tia. And don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

The main reason Celestia is hate, is the whole sending Luna to the moon.

I don’t think Celestia is a boring, its more the fact that due to how old she is, she just can’t grow as a character anymore and since most of the show is about learning and character developmental so she’s just their to help the cast grow.

So its more like you learn more about her rather then characters learn about themselves.

Kinda like Uncle Iroh in a way

I wouldn’t say like crap, but he could stand to have more respect. Which is why I’m in favor of more episodes with him and the Princesses. We have so many Pinkie and Dash centered episodes for one thing, so it shouldn’t be hard to trim down on some of the mane 6 stuff.

Oh, don’t even bring that episode. That was the second biggest waste of the potential on the show behind Celestia.

The whole universe has got it out for the little guy, huh? He can never grow up, he’ll never know where he’s from, his “friends” treat him like shit…

I don’t know.

Maybe Spike ditches them to hang out with some stallions, because the guy could stand to have friends who could be with his peers, and not more mature and authoritarian (I don’t know the more positive sounding synonyms)ponies.

Dragon Quest had a lot of potential, but it became too “Teen dragons are immense dickheads” instead of more in-depth dragon culture. So, I’m in favor of Spike dealing with those outside of the mane 6 in a well-written way.

I don’t know about that last one, Spike’s episodes tend to suck.

I mean, Owl’s? The entire cast spends the episode favoring an animal over a small child, and he’s supposed to be in the wrong? Fuck, we need an episode where Spike ditches Twilight for treating him like shit.

A lot of boring characters don’t get this many negative personalities. Even with the large fandom. But I can see the logic in that.

Which I why I’m convinced the show needs an episode dedicated to just (or at least, mainly) the Princesses about Luna’s fitting in with the modern world and Celestia’s bottled up emotions.

On a similar note, an all guys episode with Spike, Snips and Snails, and Big Mac would be fine, too.

That’s totally possible, but my reasoning was that she was boring. That, and seeing Fluttershy go through the wringer in Bird In Hoof because of her upset me. But mostly because she’s boring, and was seemingly taking screen time away from the much more interesting Luna. And her national defense strategy sucks. And the whole Gala thing struck me as pointless and mean.

But number one reason is she’s boring.

Implying Pinkie Pie was 3rd-dimensional early on…

Also, maybe it was me, but I always figured the Celestia hate (if it wasn’t just poking fun) was based on anti-matriarchal thinking. A powerful, wise, large female with all that in-universe popularity probably struck a chord with some, and it just spread from there.

I’m grasping straws, but this stuff does occur in real people.

My interpretation of all the early Celestia hate was that the character was, quite simply, boring. Despite having fantastic potential, she’s a boring paragon of holiness and light, while literally everypony else on the show is three dimensional and has relistic faults and flaws. She’s a glorified plot device, and if the writers won’t make her flawed like the rest of the cast, we’ve seen the fans will.

Which is sad, seeing as she has the potential to be an utterly fascinating and entertaining character. To make my point, let’s compare her to one of the most beloved television characters whom she shares a lot in common with, The Doctor from Doctor Who. Both are immortals who befriend and aid mortals, always fighting the good fight, but while Doctor Who has generated interesting character development by having The Doctor have to struggle with his difficultly understanding mortals, due to both his vastly superior mind and the difficulties of living forever, Celestia seems to have no dilemma in this field whatsoever. While The Doctor tends to accidentally (and amusingly) talk down to his companions and angst over the fact he will out live them, Celestia has been cross with ponies ONCE (Lesson Zero) and seems to have no difficulty growing attached to Twilight, who she will most certainly outlive. The Doctor often grapples with how badly he should punish his enemies, seeing as nobody can hold him accountable or stop him, and has admitted he needs mortal companions to keep him from becoming a monster. Celestia is always show to be perfectly just and always right, and the show never explores the possibility of her being wrong. Both have individuals very close to them that became evil (The Master, Nightmare Moon) but while The Doctor’s battles with The Master often compose the most entertaining stories and presented an interesting moral quandary during Tennant’s run (punish The Master at the cost of becoming the last of your kind), Nightmare Moon and Celestia never interacted directly.

I could go on, but what I’m saying is many fans (including me) din’t dislike Celestia herself, but we dislike that a character with such potential is being wasted.
pollodiablo

Actually, the problem is not with the existence of those alternative character (heh, ‘character’) interpretations. It’s just that tyrant Celestia has been done to death and never once in an interesting way.
It’s always the same shit, either freedom versus security or thirst for power. And she is always used as a foil to Luna Sue the idealized martyr for the cause of freedom and justice.
Trollestia is great, as long as it’s interesting and not another ‘TO THE MOOOONAH BEOOOTCH’ joke.

The Mistake
>Well, honestly, she does get treated as a Goddess on the show, even if they don’t outright call her that

She’s a princess. What do you expect her to be treated as? Do you know how a monarch works at all?

>There’s been a number of times where the characters would use a phrase

Again, look up how monarchy works. The one in charge is treated like a god, even if they weren’t. Besides, if she was a god, then the ponies would call her that.

(rest of comment)
Trolling refers to any behavior that is meant to intentionally anger or frustrate someone else. I doubt Celestia intended for those two instances to go that far.

Well, honestly, she does get treated as a Goddess on the show, even if they don’t outright call her that,(Which they never will because they know it would piss people off) There’s been a number of times where the characters would use a phrase that would have the word god in it only to replace it with Celestia and how the book in the begining depicted the two sisters in the pictures.

And while I don’t really condone the whole “Trollestia” thing, studio B kinda brought it on themselves when they had Celestia bring an obviously dying animal to a party, leave said party without taking the animal, and not even bother to tell anyone it was a phoenix. and then there was the fact that she pretty much admitted to the fact that she invited the Mane6 to the Gala for the sole purpose of causing chaos in some form or another, so the fandom’s not ENTIRELY to blame for those two things
