Yeah, having equipment other than a jacket and a gun that barely worked and were never told how to use.
 
And they didn’t torture them. Or chain them to the ground for weeks then thrown into the fight instantly. Or disregard their injuries. Or refused to give them food. Or turned down med-evacs. Or brought back those who were evacuated. Or put under the command of sadistic officers.
 
You know, I can do this all day, lets just agree that the government wanted to beat 1950’s-era United States in the “Stupid combat decisions” department and leave it at that, shall we?

Actually, the War of the First Coalition was fought that way, quote:  

A “tyrannical government’s decision to employ untrained, drafted teenagers to fight highly trained special forces” won that war.
 
I guess it goes to show that it things besides combat capabilities are what decides who wins or loses wars
