Gustauve

This is very reminicent of a time in my youth whereupon a group of friends and myself went down to the nearby river to try our luck with fishing. The local fishery had recently taken to importing catfish from America into the local river system in the hopes of attracting more sports fishers (this was at a time near the collapse of Eastern Germany, when Capitalism began to become more and more prominent as Soviet influence rapidly crumbled), and I had recently read a publication on the hitherto unheard of practice of Noodling. Well, being the rather stupid, pig-headed youth I was, I said to myself, “Gustauve, you’re going to pull one of these catfish up out of the water with your bare hands, and your friends will think you to be truly something for it.” I was wrong however. For when I actually did manage to come to grips with one of them, I was not only suprised by how big its mouth was, I was also unprepared for how large it would truly turn out to be! The river was low enough for me to get a hold of it, but I could not, for the life of me, pull the damned thing out of its den. In humiliation, I called for my friends to assist me in extricating it. First, Albrecht attempted to help by grabbing me from behind and helping add his strength to mine in pulling it. When that didn’t work, Heinrich followed suit by grabbing Albrecht in a similar manner. When we still failed to pull that damned fish out, Joachim (by far the strongest of us all) tried his luck likewise, and with similar results. Finally, Siegfried and Dietrich joined in, making us a total of six young boys clinging to one another and straining with all of our might to pull that thrice damned catfish from its hold! When we finally managed to extract that fish we could not help but cheer; we had bested the beast, and we had caught our lunch as well! The incident would have been a great memory had it not been for the fact that the next day’s paper would have an article on it, complete with a photograph that gave suggestion to something other than what truly occurred. We could not truly see it from our vantage, but apparently, a journalist from the local paper had been passing by and saw us in our struggle. He had taken a photo, and from the angle at which he’d taken it, it looked like six half naked boys dry-humping one another, and we were mortified! To this day, whenever I go back to Oberweißbach, I am always teased by friends and family alike as they pull out that news article and remind me of an embarrassing moment in my youth…

It is such memories that make the journey of life not only worthwhile, but infinitely more entertaining than what the mind could possibly come up with. Despite how humiliating it might be, I still look back on it fondly and thank God for what I’ve experienced in my life thus far.
