A good ship needs to be yin and yang so they have the right balance of similarities and differences to better play off of each other. For that reason I ship both rarimac and flutterbulk.

Most of those same pairings are characters without anything to their nature, being little more than background ponies. Big Mac and Rarity tend to get paired in situations stemming from Applejack (friend & brother, for example), or the CMC (sisters are members). That said, they don’t have much in common generally speaking, but there’s also not many stallions with ‘personalities’ in the show, so Big Mac gets pretty much all the mares, being one of the more interesting stallions.

Filli Vanilli just established them as “coworkers”. Otherwise, little commonalities, differing lifestyles, differing interests…
 
I see some Rarimac here and there, but it’s seldom sensual romance. Usually just shameless clop of Rarity in heat and passing by Big Mac before getting rutted in her boutique with the windows open.

OK, could someone PLEASE explain, in great length and detail, WHY this ship ISN’T more popular, especially since “Filli Vanilli” could be considered a big ship tease between these two?

Being a great listener… Sometimes a thankless job, yet it’s worth its weight in gold to those who need it.

I can totally imagine Big Mac being that platonic friend that all his sister’s friends pour their heart out to. The guy must be a great listener.
