“Twilight. Your duplicity is hardly surprising. I should have slaughtered tou and your recalcitrant allies long ago.”

“We’ve come to end your reign, Sunset. My kind, and all of Equestria shall be free.”

“Boldly said, but I remain unconvinced.”

The time has come! The moment is at hand!”

“YOU ARE NOT PREPARED!”

I didn’t mean the swirl of the clouds, that looks fine (done with PS’s smudge tool it looks like). I actually meant you can see places if you look close where there are very clear and sharp lines where a texture was apparently overlaid and not blended or blurred in and an overlap line was left behind. A good example of it is a perfectly straight crisp line from about the middle of the statue’s mane to the left edge of the picture. This leads me to believe he didn’t put as much time or effort into this picture as usual, and for me those little things are distracting.

And yeah a lot of his images have multiple subjects (some way more than two) but in this case the statue is not a character or anything important, it’s basically a piece of background scenery so there’s not really reason for it to feature so prominently, it just competes with Sunset for attention. These are only my opinions though as to why I don’t think it’s one of his stronger images… people can disagree but I don’t want you to think I expressed less-than positive opinions for no reason.

A lot of his images have two subjects in them, often with A light source on one. The statue may be bigger but the color and contrast of Sunset should null any attention issues.

While some of the clouds do seem weirdly swirled upon further reflection it make it seem more mystical to me,their sharper design giving a sense of foreboding.

And for the background…well since he’s supposed to be designing a uniform building negating him for copying and pasting seems like misplaced nit picking. But you obviously have a knowledge of art design and if you find fault then that is your perspective.

Subject matter doesn’t have anything to do with composition (outside of first designing an image). It’s the way the angle’s tilted, SS’s off the the side and also smaller than the statue even though she is the main subject. It’s competing for attention with her which takes away from her impact (for me).

That’s what I meant about composition. Otherwise yeah there’s some detail here, but also a lot of copying and pasting in the background (the windows, roof tiles etc in the back) and apparently texture wrapping–you can see places in the clouds (there are sharp visible lines) by the statue’s muzzle, the flag, the tower and on the left side of the clouds near the mane where the texture overlaps or isn’t blended well. I don’t normally notice stuff like that in Harwick’s work which makes me feel like this was kind of an uninspired pic compared to his usual stuff.

So yeah, still good enough but not like his usual.

You did say it felt uninspired, and if it feels weirdly composed compared to his other works well it’s probably because he drew a human form. I think this is a great picture while perhaps not as over-the-top as some of his other great images, for this scene he really put incredible design effects.

Did I say he didn’t put effort into it? I said I didn’t think it was bad, but not as good compared to what he usually does. And I don’t think it is.

Not as good is not bad, it just isn’t as “not-bad” as a lot of his other stuff. :P

I don’t know, I don’t think this is one of his best really. Not bad but really weirdly composed and kind of uninspired-feeling.
