I personally headcanon it’s more like breaking a really long nail, like an elephant’s tusk. In that case, it does grow back naturally, just not quite what it was before, so it makes sense that their magical ability would take a permanent dive and take a while to reach a level near it before. Well, that’s not considering the many magical remedies available, like Zecora’s tooth-fixing potion.
