Actually, your concept makes a perfect amount of sense. If they are already hitting an all age range of fans, and they are willing to go so far as put in a dbz action sequence, they might as well drop the whole 8-12 target altogether and go for the 10-15+ target like avatar the last airbender and many anime target. They’ve already shown they get some good success when they add stuff towards the older target in season 2 and some of season 3, so they might as well make the main plot target that age range. It would give them infinity more flexibility to write good stories.
MezzoDragon
The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

Pathetic Failure
@CronoM
This is the sad thing about kid cartoons. The execs underestimate the intelligence of their target demographic, and only put minimal effort because of that.

I really like the show, but it might be better if they aimed for a more mature audience. It won’t happen, but I’ve the right to at least put the concept out there, no?
CronoM

@MezzoDragon
Exactly. Its Season 4 already, yet for the last 2 seasons they’ve been chugging out bad story arc after bad story arc just so the execs can line their pockets with quick cash ins from toys. Instead of, y’know, making the show even better and writing proper stories. That’s 3 for the strangle party.

@Red-Supernova
I’m afraid so. Just read the official Diary of the Two Sisters. It was..HORRENDOUSLY dismissive and undetailed in Celestia and Luna’s backstory. And she also answered on Tumbler that ‘yeah, the children’s story about Cadence was correct’

Providing a good story for them really doesn’t seem that important to them right now. :(
Evowizard25

@Background Pony #1FD6
Wait, what? Cadance not worth their time? Keeping Celestia and Luna at arms length…What?!!

That’s no excuse. They’ve used Luna more effectively in her episodes than they have ever done to Celestia. (Why, oh the stars above, why? There is so much you can do with Celestia show writer. Do it, instead of giving Luna the attention. Luna already has over-hyped fanboy armies. Give Celestia some.)

And they’ve had Cadance in important parts of Twilight’s life. She practically help raise Twilight and I really think she raised Spike, since the show writers didn’t want Celestia too. (Idiotic decision.) I adore Cadance, since she’s one of my favorite characters in the show. I personally think she’s epic and I’d kill to see her have much more importance as the show goes on.

Ah yes, Twilight was being hypocritical in Daring Don’t…I still loved that episode and think it gets too much hate, but whatevs. It didn’t bother me. The other episode I think it might stem more from Twilight getting agitated. If I was frustrated with someone, I’d snap and act a little haughty to annoy them back.

{The Scootaloo thing has been done in a few fics…I honestly like it better than the ‘homeless-orphan’ idea people throw around too much, but then, I really am not much of a Scootaloo fan…sorry.)

You have great points there with Celestia being Rainbow’s mom…Though I doubt the show will ever do anything with it, since that would be giving love and attention to Celestia. eye rolls And people wonder why she gets so much flack from fans.
Background Pony #C4B4
@Evowizard25
I completely agree with your assesment of both Castle-Mania and Rainbow Falls. The reason I listed Testing 1,2,3 and Daring Don’t is we get some extremely high-and-mighty and hypocritical speeches, respectfully, from Twilight in those ones. Like “Rainbow Dash, you shouldn’t be blinded by your admiration for your idol.” (rolls eyes) I can’t believe she said something THAT obviously hypocritical.

I was more just alluding to a certain line in the fanfic then the concept of the fanfic itself dude. As for the concept, I’m still up in the air on whether its my headcanon or not. I still don’t know WHAT is the connection between RD and the elements, but it sure isn’t just being the element of loyalty.

(Actually I’ve never heard of the idea of Scootaloo being Celestia’s daughter. I did some searches and found a ton of celestia is RD mother pics, but no Scootaloo is her daughter pics. Plus I can’t think of anything within the show that points evidense to it)

All I know is that there’s an enormous amount of setup for Celestia being Rainbow Dash’s mom.

-they both have natural leadership skills that inspire others
-they are both natural pranksters that prefer a more casual setting when possible
-like Rarity’s parents and Rarity, there is a bit of role and persona reversal between the mother and daughter along with all the comparisons. Celestia is very motherly while RD is as alpha as possible, and she flat out states she would not want to be a princess.
-they both have enormous power beyond comprehension, even though Rainbow Dash is just a pegasus. Please see above picture. Celestia has ruled for 1000 years, yet her alternate is getting smashed by single pegasus.
-RD has a very strong Hercules theme to her athleticism which they extended to her pegasi’s entire race by greek theming it. So much so that her cutie mark is the same symbol as Hercules and Zeus’ mark in the Disney movie. In fact, everything about the pegasi seem Zeus-themed, with RD’s cutie mark at the dead center of it.
-flashback shows she was raised by a single father as far as we can tell. That matches perfectly with RD’s psychological profile, and raises the question of who the mother is more then any other of the main characters.

-Rainbow Dash being Celestia’s daughter would instantly explain everything about RD’s natural rainbow power, and how she started the 6 element’s destinies. Since the last use of the elements of harmony was Celestia using them all at once to seal her sister, and she admitted she lost her connection to it, its only natural that the only being who could regain the connection to it would be her heir. The element of loyalty is not dominant over the other 5 elements, so Rainbow Dash must be something unique.

I think they should do an episode for Celestia as well :) But I don’t they will :( In the last month, amy keating rogers was basically asked by Hasbro to seal up any possible backstory for any of the princesses by releasing an extremely vague and useless book as well as give some dismissive comments about Cadense’s backstory as not worth their time.

What’s more, DHX uses Celestia as the unquestionable ‘voice of the author’. Like ‘go find the crystal heart alone’ or ‘send Discord to find Tirek’. Once they give her a personality, they can’t do those things anymore. Its sad, but it seems like they are keeping all the princesses at arms length in terms of character development cause they are too useful as plot devices and author voices.

Its really a shame :(

Yeah, they really need to branch out and give focus to other characters besides the set 10 characters (the Mane 6, Spike, the CMC). Realistically, I don’t see how S5 can continue without doing something like that. Twilight’s arc has been run completely into the ground with the icing on the cake, the gaudy castle in the middle of Ponyville, with all of them ‘counselors’ to the ‘princess of friendship’. I really want to some some old characters and their interactions alone in some episodes. We don’t need the Mane 6 in every single episode.
Evowizard25

@Background Pony #1FD6
Oh yes, the fan-theory that Rainbow is actually Celestia’s daughter…That was kind of popular in the earlier days. (Scootaloo had a bit more fame in that area.) It’s an interesting one, but I don’t really hold to it.

I honestly think they should do an episode or two exploring Celestia like they do in the comics. (It’s almost like the show staff don’t really care for her.)

The series will have to branch out in different arcs to stay fresh…Like, for example, give episodes to other characters outside the set ponies.

Like how Equestria Games didn’t need the main six at all and should have focused on Cadance and Shining Armor, like they desperately need to.

(Not to mention how they pretty much forced all of the main six into most of the episodes this season.)
Evowizard25

@Background Pony #1FD6
Castle-Mania was a bland episode in general in my opinion. I didn’t really laugh, other than at Pinkie’s antics. (I thought she was really cute in that episode.)

Rainbow Falls…It gave us Fluttershy/Bulk Biceps interaction. That is its saving grace.

Daring Don’t? Testing 1,2,3? What?
Background Pony #C4B4
@Background Pony #18EE
Don’t be too offended man. I only said half or so of the S4 episodes.

I mean can you honestly say Castle-Mania, Rainbow Falls, Daring Don’t and Testing 1,2, 3 had the best Twilight dialogue? Those were the worst in my eyes in her personality respects.

@Evowizard25

“It held no purpose other then to make sure that Tirek would be able to capture Twilight’s friends without her in the way. It was stupid, pointless, held no logical reason…”

Couldn’t agree more. It makes about as much sense as Discord’s IQ dropping when he meets Tirek and forgetting about the box he already planned for the Mane 6 to defeat Tirek with his own guidance and instructions in the diary…wait what?

Anyway, I agree with everything you said about Celestia and the predictable theme. I don’t think Celestia as a tyrant either, but the fact is Celestia has her priorities completely warped and fubared. Celestia has Twilight in some warped form of Nepotism even though Twilight has confirmed living parents (not that Twilight pays any attention to them compared to Celestia)

Thing is, they need to step away from the Princess Twilight arc for any other arcs to produce actually good writing.

I’ve read some of that fanfic and I liked it but it kind of misses the point… we need a canon reason WHY it was Rainbow Dash who re-released the elements after 1000 years. No Rainbow Dash, no Element of Magic for Twilight, no elements for anybody else. Sure Rainbow Dash deserved to be mentored by Celestia, but being a pegasi, its kind of a moot point.

(In a different unfinished but interesting fanfic called ‘Mommy Nearest + Alicorn’, or just “Alicorn” with RD as the main character, it touches upon these subjects. The OC castle sage of Canterlot and Headmaster of gifted unicorns makes a comment on why Rainbow Dash should not have been raised in Canterlot despite having every reason to. He said something on the lines of “Would the burning desire for strength, competition, and loyalty in RD be ignited in the dull corridors of Canterlot? Nay, I say, she was destined to live like a pegasi, even if its not fair’ )

Heck even in Twilight’s Kingdom, RD’s hair itself(not just streaks) turns into pure energy just like Celestia and Luna’s in her Rainbow Power form(ala SS3), while the other 5 or even super alicorn-charged Twilight just had huge wavy hair or tail streaks. Amy Keating Rogers stated that the unique characteristics of Celestia and Luna, even when compared to alicorns like Cadence, were signs of their nigh godly power and longevity. And its the second time that has happened to Rainbow Dash time: 1:23

I think you probably guessed which time I was talking about even before clicking the link.

You guessed it, it was the day Filly Rainbow Dash somehow did the absolute impossible and created a Giant Sonic Rainboom that spread across Equestria. Heck, M. A. Larson just recently stated that Cutie Mark Chronicles is one of the proudest and relevant episodes to him even now.

Basically, I don’t know WHAT they are going to do for the show. The writers seems to want to go in different directions, and a lot of corporate mandate seems to be involved involved. Even if we disregard IDW, scenes like Twilight hiding her face at the beginning of Trade Ya, or Twilight missing sitting next to her friends in Equestria Games, seem to contradict the McCarthy: ‘being a princess is something Twilight wants for herself’ idea

@Evowizard25

Rainbow Dash is one of those awesome troubled characters that have a lot of heart, common sense and heroics but hide their heroism under a narcissistic mask. Its a natural coping mechanism when you want to become strong even if you grew up being doubted by everyone back home. That’s the gist of RD’s ‘rainbow crash’ backstory. I would still like her a bit if she kept her narcissistic routine while still saving people, but the fact is by the time of S2-S4, she couldn’t hide the fact how much she cared about her
  1. friends(Friendship is Magic Part 2, Sonic Rainboom, The SSCiderS 6000, ect),
  2. her hometown(Return to Harmony part 1),
  3. her morals to live by(Wonderbolt Academy),
  4. her comrades(Hurricane Fluttershy and Equestria games)
  5. large scales of people she never knew(Over a Barrel and Games Ponies Play), or even
  6. her adoptive little sis(Sleepless in Ponyville and Flight to the Finish and Equestria Games)

    Its my personal preference, but I love evolving anti-heroes like RD. Maybe its a matter of type, but I never really like the holier-then-thou protagonists, which is likely why I didn’t like S4’s representation of Twilight in half of her episodes.
Evowizard25

@Background Pony #1FD6
I still wonder why Celestia said that. It held no purpose other then to make sure that Tirek would be able to capture Twilight’s friends without her in the way. It was stupid, pointless, held no logical reason…

Actually, the more I think about it, the more I like to think of Celestia as this world’s Tzeentch. (Always coming up with illogical plans that somehow work in the end, sometimes contradicting one another, and since she’s immortal, kind of hold mortal lives as disposable if she needs to be.)

Don’t get me wrong, I love Celestia. I really do. I hate the whole ‘tyrant Celestia’ thing and bashing she constantly gets. (It’s lessened since 2011, but still prevalent.)

When they first got their rainbow powers, I thought they were all going to do signature moves against the guy…Disappointed.

That and it wasn’t surprising. Twilight always gets the big, dramatic speeches before besting the baddie. The only ones she didn’t was both Chrysalis and Sombra and both those times Cadance killed/expunged the tyrants….

Actually, why can’t we have a Cadance episode? Heck, a Cadance arc. She’s an awesome character!

Lastly, while I didn’t like Rainbow Dash when I first got into the fandom (season 1) she grew on me during season 2 and by season 3, I didn’t mind seeing her episodes. She’s still not my favorite, but she’s an okay character in my book. So while it is logical to think this would be so, I believe a similar concept has been done.

To my knowledge, there’s a whole alt-universe on fimfiction based around the idea that Rainbow was chosen to be Celestia’s student instead of Twilight. (Since Celestia was in Cloudsdale instead of Canterlot at the time.)
Background Pony #C4B4
@Evowizard25
Yeah, no kidding about the Sonic Rainboom thing. Even now the show constantly reminds us Rainbow Dash has an unusual connection to the elements of harmony at their core. The last time the people of Equestria saw a Rainboom of any kind was 1000 years ago when Celestia sealed up Luna with the Elements of Harmony, and a rainboom shook the night sky. A Rainbow Dash character arc is definitely needed.

(Don’t know how they would do a Applejack arc, would love to see one though. Even while she’s the group’s pillar and third leader, it would still be difficult….maybe something to do with the origin of Everfree Forest and why its land is so out of control? Who knows.)

Actually, Celestia admitted she meant EXACTLY what she said before at the end of the Crystal Empire episode, and confirmed that Twilight ONLY at the last second to save countless lives by giving up passing a dumb test…was perfectly okay in Celestia’s book.

Heck in the official comics approved by DHX, she outright admitted in a confession she only thinks of Twilight’s development as a ‘hero’ when she endangers the people like that, she doesn’t even consider the lives of the people or the other 5 main character’s development.
>>573010

Its all justified in her head. And honestly, that’s not news. Both Celestia and Twilight share equal amounts of blame, Celestia perhaps even moreso since DHX Twilight is almost incapable of questioning Celestia in any way.

IDW Twilight is a hell of a lot farther along then the show’s Twilight in terms of wisdom.

Like I said, the fight itself was enjoyable and awesome as all heck. Still doesn’t change the fact Twilight suddenly goes from minor combat experiance and no control over her boosted magic to full control over her boosted magic the next second and dbz fighting skills; lasers, flying and speedy physical combat. Her fight against the worm was an actual accurate display of her current ‘fighting skills’. Even if her powers are increased, her fighting skill would remain the same.

It didn’t help that not only were the other 5 completely written off as useless because Celestia intentionally asked Twilight to keep them out of the loop…. when they finally used Rainbow Power on Tirek, the other five weren’t even allowed to SPEAK. Seriously.
Evowizard25

@Background Pony #1FD6
You forgot to mention that Rainbow Dash is the only pony in recorded history to perform the ‘Sonic Rainboom’, something only thought to be a myth.

If they wanted to do another character arc like they did with Twilight, Rainbow’s the obvious choice. (Though, I’d like an Applejack one, but I don’t know how they’d do it.)

Actually, it wasn’t really Celestia’s fault…entirely for how Twilight acted in that episode. It was just how she worded it that was wrong. (Honestly, I thought Twilight was stupid there. I mean, it was almost like the whole Nightmare Moon fiasco had to be relearned.) It’s kind of annoying when the show makes Celestia give Twilight orders/words that contradict the show’s message and are supposed to be ignored anyway.

(I disagree with TK’s fight, but that’s my opinion. Absolutely loved it.)
Background Pony #C4B4
Epic Rainbow Dash is Epic. Jeez.

Can someone remind me why Twilight’s the main character and not Rainbow Dash? She is supposed to be only a normal pegasus but she is taking on an evil version of their 1000 year long alicorn ruler! Saving Twilight in the process!

No alicorn powers, no princess power-up. Nothing. Just intense training and heroic action.

Lets disregard the fact that Rainbow Dash was solely responsible for all six’s cutie marks, the cutie marks that would set them all on the path to becoming the elements of harmony.

Lets disregard the fact that Rainbow Dash was the one who brought the other 4 to Twilight and brought the team together after Nightmare Moon appeared.

She has infinitely more self-determination , selflessness and she doesn’t apologize for saving thousands of lives just because it wasn’t ‘how’ Celestia wanted (to this day, I STILL can’t believe they wrote something so horrendously amoral and retarded. Celestia asking Twilight to risk the crystal ponies life on some test? Twilight TAKING that risk until the very last second?)

And yet to be perfectly honest, I’m a huge Twilight Sparkle fan. Loved her character from day 1. But I’m absolutely sick of these last 4 finale/premiers that endlessly kiss Twilight’s ass for no reason. Her relationship with Celestia and vice-versa is beyond messed up, and how it screws everyone in Equestria in the ass is unbelievable. I’m really glad this comic has so much positive character growth for Twilight. This arc blows Twilight’s Kingdom out of the water. The fight scene in TK might of been epic, but it was a complete self-insertion OOC fight scene.
