You don’t have to be an early ‘90s kid to get that it’s parodying early ‘90s styles. Children’s cartoons make era references all the time.
Also, it should be noted that a lot of the DHX staff are in their 30s and would have grown up during that era. They’ve said on numerous occasions that they create what they themselves enjoy, so it makes sense for them to draw on something they’re familiar with. Referencing things that today’s little girls didn’t grow up with =/= pandering to bronies.
