Although it would be a fun head canon that Trixie, through her hat, helped create Starswirl the Bearded.  
Or an even weirder head canon would be that Trixie her self was sent back in time and some how accidentally discovered a (permanent) beard growing spell and she then became Starswirl the Bearded!

It would make sense that Discord happened way over a thousand years ago. In the season 4 opener both Celestia and Luna seemed quite young.  
I’d wager that defeating Discord was their first accomplishment, then came defeating Sombra and then sealing Nightmare Moon which was 1000 years ago, however I don’t know if anything canonical ever stated just how long ago defeating Discord the first time was.

I’m not sure if you’ve noticed but 1000 years before the story, pretty grim shit happened.  
The Crystal empire disappeared, Discord happened and Nightmare Moon happened.

Also when it comes to Starswirls history, he seems to be a very secluded long lived unicorn, maybe Celestia was one of his few friends? Or maybe even his only friend?

To be fair, it seems like the only ponies who know about or think highly of Starswirl are the nerdy unicorn types.  
And when it comes to the Starswirl wing of Canterlot, that is a wing of a library.  
And Canterlot is huge, they probably name different parts of the castle to lots of different cool ponies through out Equestrias history.

Ok, so Starswirl is about the most inconsistent character I have ever seen. Sometimes he is portrayed as wise and serious. Sometimes his is a nutty but friendly old mentor. But then again, sometimes he is a loner who doesn’t understand friendship.  
His apprentice helped to found Equestria. And yet he is shown helping Celestia rule the land.  
He is said to be an obscure figure in Luna Eclipsed. And yet, he has his own wing of the castle and there is a sizable celebration in his honor.  
Not to mention, he invented literally everything magic. Time Travel Spell? Starswril made that. An incomplete Alicorn spell? That was Starswirl too. And now he made the Equestria Girls Mirror?  
And that is not even going into his character design. Between the comic and the show, Starswirl has about 4-5 “official” designs.  
Long story short, if the comic and show are going to keep referencing him or using him to explain Magic Mumbo jumbo, they need to sit down and give him a single, solid characterization that doesn’t contradict itself.

I like this version of Star Swirl!  
His intelligence and craziness are in constant strife.
