The high amount of Lesbian ships is rather surprising. But I don’t find anything particularly discomforting about it. So I just shrug, go “whatever” and move on.
 
In the end, so long as the characters are good, and I guess in some way the ship makes sense then I am OK with it. Though for those characters with an established sexuality (Rarity, the Cakes [although I don’t recall there ever being any amount of shipping them with a character of the same gender] and I think Caramel was momentarily shipped in the show with an anonymous background mare) it’s kind of weird to see them shipped with another mare/stallion.
 
I have a penchant though if I do return to writing and do MLP fanfics I’d be an odd-one because I’ve no plans for lesbian or gay couples.

@BP I don’t understand your first point. The second one is actually fairly similar to my own, but going a step further, so I don’t think you’re wrong about this.

@Starswirl: The unfortunate implication there would be that if it weren’t for Earth’s rampant homophobia, most women would be lesbians or at least bi. All of the justifications I’ve seen that that slash brony enthusiasts use for why most of the females are lesbain always reveals just how little they understand about sexuality. They’re better off just openly admitting “I’d rather write slash because I don’t like any of the male characters and/or I think girl on girl is hotter.”

But yeah, the fandom almost has this weird hive-mind about background characters’ personalities or sexuality.  
It’s kinda creepy.

@BP I was actually referring to non-Fo:E works (if memory serves, the majority of characters and couples in that one were straight). And Pip having a crush on Velvet was one of the main catalysts for the whole story.
 
Still, you’re right about this fandom overall preferring lesbian couples to the point of heterophobia (if you’ve ever seen someone online jump in an author’s face for daring to make Rainbow Dash straight you’ll get what I’m saying). Another possible explanation could be heterosexual males (who constitute the majority of the fandom) not feeling ‘threatened’ by lesbians. And truthfully, the only male I’ve seen people cling to the idea of him being gay is Caramel.

@Starswirl: That excuse might hold up with the show, but Fallout Equestria is all OCs. What’s the writer’s excuse for why Little Pip had to be a lesbian, other than because that’s considered the norm for fanfics in our community?
 
I always thought the “there aren’t enough males” excuse was flimsy, anyway. Star Wars and Lord of the Rings are sausagefests, but there’s not nearly as much shipping in their fan communities as we have in the brony community.
 
If someone can write a 300k word novel about Vinyl Scratch who has exactly zero lines in the show, I think it stands to reason that our fanfic writers are capable of giving decent characterization to the show’s male characters. The problem is, when they do characterize the male characters it’s usually so they can ship them with each other, which even further deflates the “we use femslash because there aren’t enough male characters” arguments.
 
If the majority of MLP FF writers had their way, ponies would have gone extinct a long time ago (unless you’re one of those fans who still believe they reproduce through magical lesbian spawn).

Nah… I think it’s cause [no idea]. I’ve never shipped ponies. I don’t understand it, but it can be pretty funny.

Might have something to do with the fact that only 1/7th of the regular cast is male.

It’s cause lesbians, yo. Or maybe because it’s funny. Or maybe just because everypony does whatever the fapp they want…

It’s really ironic, because statistics have shown that the Brony community is overwhelmingly heterosexual, and yet our fanfiction is disproportionately gay, even compared to other fandoms.
