Funny, your comment could apply to both Hideaki Anno’s original idea (before he started to use it as a catharsis for his own issues) and the Evangelion timeline, because all of that was also true before Yui got sucked inside Unit-01 in 2004.  
Then Kyoko attempted to do better with Unit-02 and lost her mind, and as for Gendo, after failing to rescue his wife, he derailed their original scenario to screw over SEELE so he could eventually unite with her and get the world as a bonus and sent his son moving with his auntie and uncle in Bel-Air because he knew he would be a lousy father anyway.

Very very VERY early in it’s run, the Evas would of been just made from an angel’s DNA(there was not one pinned down yet as the one it came from) and robotics, none of the mess up stuff of stuff of the how they are able to control them(you know, about Shinji’s and Asuka’s mothers) just that a rare few could pilot, and maybe Gendo wasn’t as big an bastard(as in his plans would of been to just screw over SEELE and not all of humanity).  
But that’s if some of the things are true.
