Indeed they’re not exactly like helicopters which is why I said “more like”. IIRC they move their wings in a figure-8 pattern while varying the angle, creating complex vortices of air that lift them.

Of course the whole point of science is that observations lead to refinement of theories, science would never just say that an observed phenomenon is impossible.

All insects are like that. The joke is that the bumblebee has one of the largest gaps between wing size and body size of any insect in the animal kingdom. As such, they do (at first glance) look like they shouldn’t be able to fly, similar to flightless birds like chickens. Yes, their wing beating is a tad bit more like a helicopter (though that is being very loose with the definition) but at the same time it would still require an enormous amount of energy for them to fly (similar to how hummingbirds require a lot of energy to fly, since they also beat their wings really fast).

Just wanna point out, “science says bees can’t fly” is a myth. The apocryphal origin is that some engineer did a quick calculation based on the aerodynamics of fixed-wing aircraft and indeed an airplane with the characteristics of a bee wouldn’t fly. But bees aren’t airplanes. They move their wings, and so they are more like helicopters.

Honestly, I really like the fact that ‘Bumblebipp’ is now a thing. I never thought Pipp Petals, or any pony for that matter, would look so adorable as a bee.

Edit: Also, the fact that the lines spoken in the background were generated using artificial intelligence is just scary. I seriously thought that was a line that the artist spoke themselves. It sounds a lot more natural than the 15.ai voices.
