Dear Princess Celestia
I should thank you. You made me realize that by being nice and letting ponies into my life… they’ll just die. But even still, thank you for showing me that there is still a part of me that can still feel like this. Because now that I know where to find it: I’ve killed it forever. So thank you, thank you for freeing me…

  1. Good catch about Cadence.
  2. I suppose Twilight’s strategy of inviting a non-Equestrian Gryphon was to teach him the superior ways of friendship such that he has the skills needed to form a stable society with him in the ruling class.
[I HC that the griffin diaspora inside Equestria mostly lives their lives as carnivorous clawed pegasi—they’re fully integrated with ponies and have no desire to live solely amongst their own kind]

Not big on the whole “eternal mourn” trope, but this one is very well done.
Great work on lighting and setting the mood, really gets you thikning on what happened.
I like to think that Twilight managed to cope with the eventual loss of her friends, and lead Equestria through mostly tranquil times for as long as possible. All we can do is to learn how to live with the loss of someone dear. Still the image above is definetely one to remember.

“Hell, the sole reason why I personally kept watching the show post season four was Starlight’s introduction. She revitalised the show and it was due to her that the series…”
That’s one helluva reason to stay for. I would drop the show like a bad habit if it focus even more on her cynical nonsense that clashed with show’s overall tone and often stood at odds of what this show supposed to be about - especially given her toxic friendship with Trixie. Not to mention blatant favouritism from the writers. Each to their own I suppose.

Besides, Cadance is not even closely related to Celestia anyway.
Did you not notice that Twilight targeted the children of foreign ruling classes to be her exchange students? She may not be able to alter the other species’ cultures, but she has a realistic shot at altering their approach to policy.
Except for Gallus, but since Griffonstone has pretty much turned into a anarchist commune, it was not like there was any recognizable elite group to coopt.

Congratulations, I’ve got some insomnia and you’ve baited me into longposting, even though I mostly agree with your conclusions.
isn’t actually biologically immoral and just has a dramatically extended lifespan. Either in time, or by some illness, or violent trauma, Twilight will one day see her friends again.
Like the elves from LotR but can also get fatal viral or bacterial infections?
The reasons why I personally disregard the finale, heck, most of the last two seasons, was how little thought was put into the winding down of the series, the whole plot of the school of friendship, and especially to Celestia’s and Luna’s abdication the idea of Twilight taking the role of sovereign.
$💯% this!
It’s not even that any of those ideas were bad on their own; it’s how little thought was put into their execution. The School of Friendship was an excellent opportunity to let new characters learn the same lessons Twilight and Friends learned in Season 2. Make them give oral reports to Twilight or Starlight at the end of each episode. Instead, we got the show as written where the M6 couldn’t stay out of the protagonist role. The Royal Sisters abdicate? Many setups about how they can no longer protect Equestria due to a lack of direct connection to the Elements. Three new alicorns emerged during living memory of non-mortal ponies and it’s a clear magical sign that it’s time for peaceful regime change. Instead of springing this on Twilight, make it part of the plan starting in Season 7 and train Twilight for national leadership.
Twilight is realistically minor royal at best. Her place in the royal family was solely on merit and although commendable, that doesn’t put her even close to the top in the line of succession. A royal family is just that; family. Twilight’s only connection to the royal bloodline is through her brother and it’s a weak connection. In reality, Twilight is more of a duchess than a princess; in the line of succession, she’s right at the bottom. The order of succession goes; Celestia > Luna > Cadance > Shining Armor > Flurry Heart > Blueblood > Twilight. Twilight’s so low that if she was carrying Flurry on her back and a guard was trotting past, she/he would be saluting Flurry as she is the senior royal in this situation.
Here’s where you lost me. It’s not a royal family: it’s two semi-immortal horse goddesses. Yes, they are sisters and some Canterlot nobility style themself as “Prince,” but no one has expectations that they’ll give up the throne.
Also, why the hay are there stallions in your line of successions? Not only are they not alicorn princesses, but they also do not have the mare’s brains and temperament necessary to lead a nation.
Celestia & Luna are no longer connected to the Elements and retire. Cadence already has a throne in the Crystal Empire. Flurry may be ahead of Twilight in some formal precedence, but she is still too young when the Royal Sisters peace out, so Twilight rules as regent and becomes the de facto Queen of all Equestria (but not the Crystal Empire). Unless you mean to suggest that Cadence moves back to rule Equestria once Flurry is old enough to rule the Crystal Empire [ok, you address this in the next paragraph]. I do like the idea of Twilight & Flurry taking over for C&L as a pair of light/dark alicorn princesses, one for the day shift and one for working nights.
the school didn’t work

For the most part, the Mane Six’s story arcs were more or less completed by around season seven or so. They had a good number of secondary characters to put more time in writing storylines on that would have kept the writers from coming up with random story arcs that made little sense other than desperately trying to keep the original cast relevant.
Now I’m back to agreeing with you. As I said above, the Students were an incredible missed opportunity to re-teach the same lessons to new personalities.
I still can’t believe that they were so lazy that they just recolored Celestia’s design for older Twilight, let alone what they did to poor Spike…
Also in agreement.

The art is great, but this is one of the reasons why I hate the finale and disregard it from canon.
Now the whole ‘Twilight will outlive her friends’ thing is not why I don’t like the finale. I actually find the idea quite interesting for Twilight to having to learn to accept that her closest friends will not always be around and find ways to cope with their parting. Granted, I personally accept the headcannon that Twilight, and any ascended alicorn like her, isn’t actually biologically immoral and just has a dramatically extended lifespan. Either in time, or by some illness, or violent trauma, Twilight will one day see her friends again.
The reasons why I personally disregard the finale, heck, most of the last two seasons, was how little thought was put into the winding down of the series, the whole plot of the school of friendship and especially to Celestia’s and Luna’s abdication the idea of Twilight taking the role of sovereign. Let’s get one thing straight, I love Twilight as a character, for many reasons I find her endearing. She was more than just fine in her role in helping ponies in need and providing guidance for those whom truly needed it. But running a whole country, giving her tendency for massive overthinking, irrational judgment and decision making, little experience and training for the role and her nervous breakdowns when things don’t work in the way she intended, is a recipe for disaster. If the whole reason for the collapse of G4’s civilisation was due to Twilight taking the reins, it wouldn’t surprise me.
Besides the point, Twilight is realistically minor royal at best. Her place in the royal family was solely on merit and although commendable, that doesn’t put her even close to the top in the line of succession. A royal family is just that; family. Twilight’s only connection to the royal bloodline is through her brother and it’s a weak connection. In reality, Twilight is more of a duchess than a princess and in the line of succession, she’s right at the bottom. If Celestia and Luna had to step down, which is another plot that makes little sense, Cadance would take the crown and due to her marriage, would become queen. She has much more leadership experience and the knowledge in ruling a kingdom than Twilight has and would be the pony along with her husband in taking over.
This would leave Flurry in charge of the Crystal Empire and if anything would happen to her parents, she’ll be the next in line as so would her foals if she had any. Twilight’s only pathway to power would be if something truly catastrophic befell her brother, sister-in-law, niece and Blueblood and any of their possible decedents. But that’s highly unlikely to occur so she would in reality never hold much power anyway.
Now with the school, although in principle a good idea, in practice it wouldn’t work. It’s all good to encourage multiculturalism, but teaching a diverse creature base the concept of friendship only through the guise of what Equestrians do in the hope of them spreading it to their native lands and changing their whole society to more resemble Equestria would never work in reality. It would be like trying to spread the concepts of the Metric System, universal healthcare and gun control to Americans; it’ll never work. No country or culture is perfect so expecting another nation to conform to your ideals and morals is not only wrong, but it defeats the purpose of embracing one’s differences in the first place. That’s besides the issues of having no qualified teachers or staff, no legislative reason whatsoever for operating besides that on a whim of a minor noble. It would’ve been a better idea, both in terms of practicality and financially to add these lessons in the general national school curriculum than establishing a massive school where the bits could’ve been better spent elsewhere.
For the most part, the Mane Six’s story arcs were more or less completed by around season seven or so. They had a good number of secondary characters to put more time in writing storyline’s on that would have kept the writers from coming up with random story arcs that made little sense other than desperately trying to keep the original cast relevant. Hell, the sole reason why I personally kept watching the show post season four was Starlight’s introduction. She revitalised the show and it was due to her that the series lasted for much longer than it would’ve been and they should’ve focused more on her and those closest to her while having the original cast come in every one in a while.
So yeah, the last two seasons were in large a big blemish on a otherwise fantastic series, albeit with a few diamonds in the rough. I still can’t believe that they were so lazy that they just recoloured Celestia’s design for older Twilight let alone what they did to poor Spike…
