DragonMan by the way, I wish Hasbro had you in charge for G5 2D series style and design!

I see your point about the newbie artists.
(What’s with the huge eyes? I first thought lol).
Anime inspired style, actually lol
Since I watched anime before, it didn’t take me by surprise.
Big eyes are supposed to psychologically make people feel something is cuter than it might actually be :D
Don’t be so quick to write off this new series based on a handful of 10-second clips void of any real context.
Well, still. It’s obvious that majority of the budget Hasbro will be putting into the main 3D series (and two specials). And that this youtube based series will have very short episodes most likely (let’s say 5 min long).
If that’s the case, there won’t be a possibility to tell deep and substential stories and develop characters well with the 2D series at all.
I think, Hasbro realizes it, and that’s why they want to focus all their efforts on the 3D show instead. And have this 2D show as a supporting show (most likely for “Youtube Kids”).
My objective prediction: it will feel like for a younger audience and will be not always consistent with the main 3D movie/series, pretty much like it was with Pony Life.
Of course, only time can tell. :)

You missed the point. “Cheap” and “simplistic” makes creativity accessible to new and budding artists. And that means better and more plentiful fanart, and more newbies willing to doodle. Aesthetic is subjective. G4 designs were nothing fancy. I wasn’t so impressed with them myself at first glance. (What’s with the huge eyes? I first thought lol). It was the fanart that drew me in. So what if the leg anatomy was off? The show was still dazzling. And we got ten years of amazing storytelling and fanart that was effectively even more entertaining than watching the show itself. Don’t be so quick to write off this new series based on a handful of 10-second clips void of any real context.

But this isn’t how 2D series looks… If it looked like this Izzy image here, it would be great!
I’ve seen previews of the actual 2D series animation, and it’s horrible, cheap and simplistic.

It’s not at all like G4 FiM was. The worst part is the leg’s anatomy.
But I’m glad that it turned out that the 2D series will be just a small youtube series. :)
Most likely aimed at a younger audience, like Pony Life was. And might be as unimportant to the main series/movie canon (Pony Life was an alternate universe completely).
The main series we are getting in September this year is the 3D series, looking just like the movie did!
And we also will get two 3D specials along with it (the first one in May).

Fanart was such an integral part of the FiM experience. 3D rendering can be very intimidating. G4 ponies by contrast are easy to draw, and that helped inspire many amateurs to give it a go. In many ways the fanart even transcended the show itself. That’s why I’m glad G5 is getting a 2D series.
