A (admittedly far-fetched) theory I’ve been thinking - there was some other power/nation of creatures in the background that we didn’t see in FiM. They were paranoid and xenophobic, but okay with the state of affairs because no one else was a threat to them: Equestria was a major power that had some allies like the Hippogriffs, but they otherwise appeared content to stay within their geographical sphere of influence; the Griffons were busy squabbling among themselves and there were no signs of them unifying again; the Yaks were loud and brash but didn’t show any signs of moving beyond their territory; the Changelings were a dangerous hive of parasites, but they were focused on Equestria and were probably considered a counter to Equestria’s influence; the only real danger may have come from Dragon raiders, but they were probably already well equipped to deal with that. So they stayed secure within their borders, and simply watched the other creatures.
And then…along comes the “Princess of Friendship” and all of these other creatures that had been either internally or externally divided started working and cooperating together. The Changelings change, and what had long been considered a counter to Equestria became Equestria’s ally. The Yaks and Dragons begin to have friendly and cooperative relations with Equestria, with Eqeustrians having significant influence with those nations’ leaders. The Griffons too, suddenly start showing signs that they might reunify and return to great power status.
So this mystery power, whose security had long relied on the divided nature of the other species, suddenly found itself in a situation where these species were cooperating and working together, and building themselves up. Observers and analysts probably concluded that long term, the unity among all these nations had the potential to form a power bloc that would vastly exceed their own. They panicked, for this cooperation and growing unity among the Ponies, Dragons, Yaks, Griffons, Changelings, and Hippogriffs posed a significant threat to their own power - and from their point of view, a threat to their safety.
So they begin making plans - whether through subversion or outright force - to try to undermine this alliance of the species. And they probably conclude that Equestria is the glue that is holding it all together - eliminate that, and you eliminate the alliance. And whatever the result of these machinations were led to the current world state of affairs.
True. I do kinda hope if Spike is still alive he’s older, wiser and bitter.
I guess they will explore that in the series…might be better than reveling it in a movie which would only have so much time to explain.
I know! Like what the heck happened to cause the seemingly amazing kingdom Twilight created that United all creatures? What did Luster Dawn screw things up?
And given whatever calamity caused Equestria to fall apart, the Dragons may have also reverted to their old ways.
Well unlike the fake propaganda, this is sadly real.
