ive heard of the Louisiana tigers but dont know much about them
Firstly cavalry wasn’t a big deal by the time of the American Civil War. By and large cavalry units in 19th century warfare, especially after the Crimean War became more like raiders and recon than something used aggressively head on, as has been the trend of several centuries in western military development. They weren’t a head-on charging force any more, but deployed to secure advance positions before the regular infantry because they ride out to the spot, de-horse, and hold the spot in a skirmish line and then leave when they had to.
Infantry was in all cases the hammer and the anvil. Light infantry, Zouaves were the type to be at the front.
The Tiger Zouaves had an aggressive and unstable reputation, fighting often among themselves in drunken brawls and about as infamous as they were notable. Among the Louisiana companies, they had the worst reputation for disorder and several men had to be executed for getting drunk and starting particularly violent fights.
In campaign they were used as the shock troops of the South.
