a let’s-go-with-millenium of evergrowing oppression, lessons lost in time, and inexplicable loss of magic (one of the most crucial things to like most of the unicorn population) will do that to ya.
 
from what I can gather, earth ponies are seen as stupid, pegasi are thought to be evil, and unicorns are viewed as monsters. and if that is true, I feel those beliefs were what caused unicorns to be chased into the forests.
 
and as stated before, a strong majority of unicorns highly valued their magic and I don’t find it off that most unicorns went insane from both loss of magic and isolation in the forests, so now superstitious chants are pretty much the closest thing they have.
I stated my best guess from back when it was just trailers and I still hold true to it

I can imagine the descendants of unicorn nobility weeping at the glory days of unicorns when they used to be seen as the most cultured and elegant of all creatures.
 
And I can imagine them blaming the loss of magic on an Earth Pony-Pegasus conspiracy to rid the world of magic.
 
One day they shall regain their prestige and all other races will look to them in awe again.
