I think it has less to do with making them ‘more productive workers’ and more to reduce their aggression and make them less violent.
Observation
I still want to know what gave early humans the original inspiration that chopping your livestock’s balls off with a sledgehammer makes them more productive workers.
It’s fun to read this seeing how this past weekend I attended a local fair. They had a tent there for the local history people, and one item on display was gelding shears. Those things… They let me pick them up before I was informed as to their use. shudder
They told me it was all very quick. Though you did have to tie the stallion firmly first or he wouldn’t cooperate.

It COULD mean this is the grotto where ponies go to get gelded, as in, “the gelding grotto”, the grotto for gelding (v), as opposed to the grotto for geldings (n).
