Screencapping stills from the movie did it a massive disservice. Those ponies need to be in motion to look their best.

Filly Funtasia ponies have no nostrils!

Truth be told; I eventually warmed up to this image. It actually provides one of the best examples I’ve seen showing how different the two art styles are, and if it wasn’t for the description it would have instead looked like the op was trying to prove the differences between the two.

I wonder if this is from the same op…

That’s basically the main point of my post: There are so many noticeable differences that it actually is easily proven to be a completely different style.

There is no similarities at all between the two aside of them being both 3D and Pony characters. I think some people are so scared of 3D and fixed on 2D animation, that they systematically reject anything 3D CGI. Can’t win with those people. All we can do is enjoy G5 along with those who appreciate it too.
 
Watching the promo animation alone, shows very clearly how top-level the quality of the models and animations actually are.  
And no one is pointing out the elephant in the room: The models are all truly furred and use real hair, as opposed to smooth textured skin/mesh modeled manes/tails
 
Lot of people fixate on strange details.. to be honest.

Detailed notes on how different the art styles are:
 
The Academy and its rooms in Filly Funtasia have the lowest quality lighting of all 3D models; they are seemingly the only models in the entire show where the gold is not shiny! Even then, the “gold” in Filly Funtasia is usually more of a shiny yellow, while G5’s gold is actually gold.
 
Filly Funtasia has very thick legs that are mere centimeters from touching each other if the character is standing straight upward, which at that point the Filly Funtasia characters also don’t have their joints truly visible when standing straight upward. G5 has properly proportioned legs that don’t suffer from either of these issues.
 
In Filly Funtasia, all males and females share the exact same muzzle shape, as notable from all angles. G5, like G4, has muzzle shapes that differ between males and females. G5’s muzzles also keep the nostrils which Filly Funtasia lacks.
 
In Filly Funtasia, the unicorn horn is on the character’s face, as opposed to it being in the hair proper as seen in G5.
 
In G5, the characters’ manes are properly proportioned to their heads (at longest reaching the floor) and their tails are of proper length. In Filly Funtasia, the manes at longest reach barely past the chest area and their tails are long and poofy.
 
In Filly Funtasia, the hooves are extremely simplistic and flat in shape, while G5 has more detailed and realistically-proportioned hooves.
 
Filly Funtasia’s eyes are much bigger and, if shrunk down to G5 scale, are actually further apart in positioning than in G5. Filly Funtasia’s eyes also usually have the highlights baked onto them (as is evident with them being simple white circles), as opposed to G5’s eyes which actually reflect light.
 
Characters in Filly Funtasia have smaller ears than the characters in G5.
 
And even then, there may be even more differences; kind of hard to observe every single pixel in every single frame.

Apples and oranges. to be honest.  
The only thing in common between the two is , both is 3D CGI.  
I love how no one actually points out that the quality of the G5 models, setup, lighting, furring etc is top quality here.  
People Nitpicking over fall in two categories so far either have nothing better to do or do not like CGI stuff in general.

I think it’s much better without the uploader’s intended context. Without the uploader’s context, it can instead make an amusing cutaway gag.
 
EDIT: Basically, one group having a difficult time in one area of a building, while another group has an easy time in another of the same building.

Anyway Hasbro should have thought that with the face like this, many people would have compared them to Filly Funtasia and I don’t think anyone was able to do it better and they also copied the detail of making the horn of a different color than the body.  
In my opinion they didn’t even try to do something more characteristic …  
however, there is no doubt that some details such as the mane, ears and hooves are better made than Filly Funtasia, but the problem still remains because the face is the most important part that gives an identity to the characters and in fact, if we think about the Mane 6 and the princesses each of them had a different shape of the eyes that distinguished them from each other and made their expressions unique.  
They haven’t even tried it here, they all have the same shape of eyes and muzzle …

how do you rip off a rip-off

CGI looks lazy and give them less life than 2 D. Filly funtasia didn’t sell because of this lifeless art and Hasbro is trying to copy them. Their writing will have to blow the minds in order to resurrect the fandom. Considering 99% of fan art is either made using G4 artstyle or none of them even tries to be show accurate you can tell this generation won’t last long.

You can say G5 is an improvement of G2. Unlike G2 toys, the G5 ones don’t have overly thin legs and thus probably are able to stand still.

G2 was kinda underrepresented from what I gather so if this is the case then this is fine with me

It seems to me that their intention is to do a remake of the G2 instead of making an improvement of the G4 style …

Now that I’m thinking of it; Many comparisons between Filly Funtasia and G5 are to me like saying Shadow The Hedgehog looks exactly like Sonic The Hedgehog.

It’s literally just 3D animation. That’s like the only similarity other than them being ponies.

Step 1: Look at the packaging. If it’s say My Little Pony it’s not Filly Funtasia.
