The reason is because of everything that happened in the comments thread and that’s exactly what the uploader wanted to happen from the description. These shipping post are meant to stir up drama towards people who don’t like X and X shipped instead of their favorite ships and boy did it work here, just in a much different direction. It’s died down though or the mods eventually would have came in and said “y’all better shut yo’ mouths right meow!”

The answer is because the writers needed to compensate for years of character stagnation with a dramatic physical change that could make up for years of lapses persona growth narrative for spike storywise.
 
The other answer would be who cares. Spike grew wings late into the show. If you find that a big deal and a signal that he’s too young to ship with anyone, fine. Just be aware that others either don’t subscribe to that belief or just don’t care about any age thing and will just ship whoever at whatever point in the show they want. That doesn’t make them bad people or creeps, just regular shippers like everyone else.

When was it ever mentioned that Spike and other dragons have a slower life span than ponies? Tell the names of the episode and the character who said it. If you can’t answer those 2 simple questions, then it means nothing to the show.

Okay, and? My issues with Sparity come from the fact that I DO know that their age gap is huge. Personally, I’m not the type of person that freaks out over inferred age gaps. But when they’re 100% canon, yeah, they can disgust me. Considering the hinting Dragon Dropped got away with, hinting that perhaps Gabby helped Spike move on from Rarity because he maaaay have a crush on her, that’s also enough indication that Gabby should be around his age. If the show dared to actually ship Spike with an adult, they would’ve made Sparity canon tbh. But of course they didn’t.
 
…Did you not read the first half of my reply? I explained that it’s seen IN THE SHOW that Spike has a slower life span than the mane 6. How do you explain that Spike got puberty waaaay back in season 3 when he probably has about a 4-5 year age difference from Twilight? And Twilight was clearly an adult by that point?

And by the way, that idea of dragons having a slower life span was Lauren’s idea, but it was never explained or talked about in the show, therefor, we might as well ignore it and assume Spike’s life span is the same as everyone else’s in the show, normal.

Comparing griffon years to dragon years, for one thing, is difficult to do without any reference because it seems like age depends on the species. In human years, it looks like Spike would only be 5 years younger than Twilight and maybe Rarity, given that he hatched when Twilight was trying to get into Celestia’s school. However, that’s not the case, as Spike goes through puberty waaaay later in season 8, which he would’ve gone through much earlier if Twilight’s age is anything to go by.
 
It’s possible that griffons age like ponies, given that Gilda seems to be about the same age as Rainbow Dash both in the flashback of The Lost Treasure of Griffonstone AND in Gilda’s regular age in the series. However, we don’t really have a clear point on how old Gabby is. The only real indicator is that she has a job, indicating that she at least could be a teenager. Considering her personality and the way she’s been linked with other younger characters as equals (like the CMC), to me, it comes across as Gabby could be around Spike’s age, somewhere from pre-teens to late teens. But again, her age is up-to-interpretation given the information the show gives us, so it’s different than how Rarity is clearly and undisputibly an adult since the beginning of the series ‘cause she’s had a successful business since even before the show started.
 
It’s crazy how you Spike shippers keep saying ‘Nobody gives a damn about a fictional character’s age’ when there are clearly people who do, and not just paranoid people. How do you avoid the elephant in the room is just beyond me.

And for the record, i’m neither a Spabby or a Sparity shipper, but I do ship Spike with other characters that look a bit older than him, because who gives a damn about a fictional character’s age, only paranoid people do that.

Just because they’re fictional doesn’t mean that I can’t be disgusted though? It’s funny how you all preach about the freedom to ship whatever you like, but apparently that freedom can’t be given to people to be disgusted by whatever puts them off. You can ship whatever you like, but everyone has the right to disagree as long as it’s not by giving personal attacks to shippers, which I haven’t done.

I’m glad you understand, but I completely get that people can ship whatever they want, and I don’t get why is everyone acting like I don’t understand that. I’ve just been defending my freedom to criticize it and be disgusted by it. The BG pony below us is the one that’s taking this way out of proportion. I don’t comment in any of the ugly fanart examples you mentioned, I ignore them and move on because they’re also not my thing. I commented on this meme because it was against Sparity, because I do prefer Spabby over it, and because I honestly still find it ridiculous how butthurt Sparity shippers can get about people judging their ship that very clearly requires you to ignore a clear age difference to ship it. That’s all.

It’s all good and well to feel that way. It can be cringe at times to see cartoon children getting shipped with adults (That’s right, I’m looking right at you Scott Pilgrim and Knives). However, to not drag this out any longer, they are indeed just fictional characters which I highlighted in my previous comments and literally no harm is committed from people using them however they want. For example the pony characters and any of the other species will be drawn in many bad ways by the artist here like for gore, vore, rape, abuse, etc. It can definitely trigger a lot of people here and me as well in some cases, but there’s not really any stopping it, not even with complaining about it. They’re still make believe and can be used in so many ways so the guy I was talking to when I first got here is absolutely right about them being just cartoons for that fact. Whatever characters you like are only being used in someone’s fantasies and they want to show it while also no real damage is being done to said characters you like unless something happened to them canonically from a show. Anyways I think from here we’ll need to be chill or comments will start getting deleted and BP is probably laughing at the success they caused from this image.
