They were able to be broken by changelings simply banging their heads into it.
A shield covering an entire fortress city generated by a single Unicorn who was sick and being drained. The shield had been continuously running for at least a greater part of a whole day, and the fact it held against a number of Changelings bashing themselves into it is still an impressive feat. Concentrated and focused to a localized, personal field, it is absolutely within reason a shield conjured by Shining Armor could hold against at least some small arms fire, and most likely more powerful weaponry.

.

If we consider the comics, Queen Chrysalis was able to completely vaporize a stone wall in a single blast, and Twilight made a shield that held against it (though it's suggested some magical enhancement was used I think). But we've seen other magical blasts on the show tear through walls of structures and rip through more than a foot of ground leaving a trail of smoke. And we've seen ponies struck and crushed (or nearly so) by things with far more destructive kinetic energy from any bullet.

So while I believe it's doubtful the average Unicorn pony could conjure a shield strong enough and long enough to ward off the attack from a bullet, I legitimately doubt bullets would be very effective killing tools against the average pony.

If there's doubt from that, then don't forget Rainbow Dash's famous feat of smashing herself as a pony projectile into AJ's old barn and blowing it up with enough force to uproot the fence around and leading up to it.

Earlier strikes with enough force to shake the ground in the trench AJ was in and toss a wooden plank at least several hundred feet to imbed itself into solid earth of a road. And with enough force to damage through one side, some of it's structural integrity, and out the other, and she's not a tiny bullet, but as stated nearly the average mass of 100 kg).

For speed and reaction, Twilight was able to seize hold of Rainbow Dash's tail while she was smashing herself through the barn. It's not quite up there with literal bullet dodging, but still extremely impressive.

That shield was covering an entire city and the changelings were banging their heads into it over the course of several days while the unicorn generating it was slowly weakening. Not comparable in the slightest.

@MagpulPony
My math puts them at the same kinetic energy. Their far greater penetration may or may not play a factor depending on how shields work (have they shown smaller areas as more effect at breaking them than brute force?). If you have the equation to convert KE to force I'd be grateful.

I would say physics alone makes it pretty clear that the mass of a pony moving at that speed would not be anywhere near as devastating as the impact of a 30mm depleted uranium round, let alone upwards of 15-20+ rounds per second in one concentrated area. Nothing is going to withstand a burst of that.
Incursor

@MagpulPony

Per >>1328910 ponies mass 98 kg. Horses run at 55 miles per hour, lets assume they fly at 110 mph = 49.2 meters per second. That give them a kinetic energy of 118611 J, nearly same as the 112,160 of a 30mm chanigun or "180 times the energy of the .45 caliber handgun bullet."

I've estimated changeling head size is 0.87 of a ponies so per the provided source's 47 cm puts changeling head size at 40.89cm = 408.9mm = 525272 mm^2.

The 118611 J / 525272 mm^2 = 0.226. The 12.7x99 BMG is 20195 J / 531 mm^2 = 38. The 5.56x45 NATO is 1859 J / 102.1 mm^2 = 18.2. A 9x19mm Parabellum is 617 J / 255 mm^2 = 2.42.

I can see how smaller area makes bullets more dangerous in theory. The question now is do shields work by putting x energy into blocking making it just a matter of KE or do they work in way that makes physical penetration relevant?

They were able to be broken by changelings simply banging their heads into it. The immense kinetic energy from a bullet all focused on one small point would likely shatter the shield. Especially large, fast moving calibers.

@MagpulPony
What exactly have we seen on the show suggesting average shields wouldn’t be powerful enough to block bullets? We’ve seen shields powerful enough to block attack that could completely destroy the walls of castles. That was an exceptionally powerful user, but that brings up we’ve never seen a normal level shield as the only ones who’ve used them are exceptional.

I’d more question if they could cast the shield in time before the trigger is pulled. And if they could why not just cast a spell on the enemy?

The 4D part is the best theory I've seen so far.

Otherwise is seems to just boils down to them controlling the fabric of reality, no better than just saying "because magic". It doesn't offer any useful limits, rules, or testable hypothesizes about it.

But it is a solid start, and I'm going with that as the how magic works.

Can you explain more about your Superstring Theory or link? It sounds interesting.

I have a long-winded series of text that I broke down into posts with related pictures on my Facebook page, if you have a means to read it.

In short (and very laymen's terms), a professor in theoretical physics proposed the concept of "string theory" and "superstring theory" where, instead of gravity or mass of objects interacting, there are miniature "strings" on the subatomic level connecting all things, but the properties and manipulation of the different particles determines their sense of density, motion, reaction, etc. So instead of physical particles, it's just rapidly vibrating "strings".

The same goes for dimensions, linked together and interacting by the "superstrings" that connect them, to explain black holes, wormholes, and anything else bypassing normal physical laws of nature as we know them.

.

Assuming this is how any universe functions on the most basic level, Equestrian creatures, namely ponies, are genetically imbued with the ability to manipulate these micro "strings" (subatomic) and/or macro "superstrings" (dimensional).

This allows Earth Ponies to manipulate the string elements in their bodies and the physical things around them, aiding in harvesting and growing plants better, stronger, faster; to [literally] harvest rocks, expand/contract physically (like when Pinkie Pie is squished under a massive boulder that she just lifted), hold and manipulate objects with their hooves (altering the strings to bond), and perform otherwise impossible physical feats.

It grants Pegasi the ability to manipulate the particle strings of the atmosphere, so they can walk on clouds, create and move weather, etc.

.

Fluttershy can fall from impossible height and land safely on a cloud of butterflies; she can manipulate and alter the state of many creatures. It's why she can have trouble pushing open a door, but be capable of easily wrestling a bear, or influence a dull Dragon.

.

In theory, Unicorns would be capable of using their horns as a focused conduit to the vibrancy of strings, even accessing a 4th dimension and the string energies related to perform "magic". Teleportation to move things through superstrings, telekinesis by unhinging the strings around the mass of objects, compacting objects or intermixing them; through focus even manipulating them.

.

In a similar vein, this allows Pinkie Pie to skip and cross interdimensional space, pull things "off screen" or out of impossibly small spaces, defy gravity and other laws of physics, stretch, bend, squish, roll, improbably predict and intercept information, put herself in exactly the right time and place, and even break the 4th wall. Subjecting herself to bending and warping reality around her immediate surroundings through an unseen 4th dimension would rightly make her go nuts with silliness.

If that didn't make sense, then imagine being 2D creation like a square, and having a dot appear in one spot, then magically teleport to another spot. Because you exist in a 2D space, you wouldn't be able to comprehend this, but nothing teleported; a 3D creation used depth to pick up and move the dot, but from your limited perspective, it teleported. Same thing happens with Pinkie Pie, a 3D creation crossing a 4D plane.

.

The celestial bodies sun, moon, stars would exist in a 4th interconnected, visible dimension by its own strings. When Alicorns raise and lower the sun/moon, which requires either tremendous aging and a choir of Unicorns, or the combined might of different string manipulations of the 3 pony types (Alicorns), they can control day and night.

When Twilight completed Starswirl's spell, she accessed this celestial dimension between and through space and time, and returned an Alicorn. Princess Luna crosses through here to access metaphysical dreams, chain-linked strings of the many minds in Equestria.

.

Tirek growing in size as he absorbs the magical strength, Discord a creature of Chaos from another dimension entirely able to rearrange the strings of all things around him but not destroy anything, King Sombra and Starlight performing mind control, interdimensional links and leaks into the Equestria Girls universe or the mirror worlds in the comics, Tree of Harmony focusing everything rooted in its own reality, the further Equestrians get, the hasher reality becomes like the untamable blizzards threatening the Crystal Empire, the Everfree Forest needing the Tree to remain tame, Dragons resistant to magic, in-fighting between the 3 pony tribes upsetting balance and creating unruly Windigos that require loving cooperation and self-sacrificial risk to burn out inviting the string connections from others in, it's all here.

RPG stats don't necessarily translate to what's shown in the show.

3 — If it's common why haven't we seen the Royal Guard unicorns or others use it? And Sweetie was trained by Twilight putting her in the exceptional category, as would any playable character. Despite unicorns having a dedicated school only a tiny fraction have shown that level of proficiency. If it were so easy to teach/learn we'd see far more characters use them, right.

2 — Valid. But that doesn't answer the question of why not use telekinesis (which seemingly never misses) or horn blasts instead of an obscure spell.

1 — If they come up with one for the other types I'd be curious to see.

As for pegasi flight might make them harder to hit, but why hav't we seen them weaponize their weather manipulation even in the shows fights (outside the smokescreen in the finale)?
Rainbow was the only pony to break the light spectrum, which doesn't translate into real life power levels since RL light spectrums don't have anything to break (the speeds related have been calculated as impressive but the light spectrum part is irrelevant to those and as shown in The Movie a liability).

And did earth ponies do anything significant in the finale?

Can you explain more about your Superstring Theory or link? It sounds interesting.

3 — According to the RPG book Tails of Equestria, shield spells are very common and pretty easy, and we've seen Sweetie Belle use a basic, localized shield spell to ward off Flyders. The question comes in if the shield is strong enough to ward off an area effect, tremendous blast, or high velocity.

2 — I get the impression that Accelero is more generalized and not even originally intended to be used on an individual living thing. It can also be theorized that the smaller the object the easier it is lifted and cast, and presumably the faster it can be thrown.

1 — The information seems to be labeled "1.2", so the other pony types probably have their own set. But I have a hunch that firearms wouldn't deal as much damage on a pony as people think based on some of the punishment we've seen them take and the distinctly different laws of nature they seem to follow.

As per my Superstring Theory to Equestria, which explains everything from Pinkie Pie breaking the 4th wall to Pegasi walking on clouds, and Alicorns raising the sun and moon, ponies (those best able to do this, the Earth Ponies specifically) are able to manipulate their "mass" and materials around them, which would allow them to resist the normal damage and penetration afforded to projectiles, including firearms.

On further, some (notably Pegasi) would be capable of a similar manipulation of the atmosphere, allowing them to control weather, create storms, kick lightning out of clouds, build structures out of clouds, handle solid objects on clouds, fly at incredible speeds and impossible heights, and even shatter the light spectrum. One can only imagine the multitudinous applications that brings to dealing with a non-magical Human armed with a gun.
Incursor

Questions:
* What about earth ponies and pegasi?
* Why accelerate the bullet back as opposed to telekinesis or magic blasts? (We've never seen telekinesis move things at bullet speeds and Accelero only seems to effect the user.)
* Are shield spells common enough for this viable? (The only ones who used them on their own were magically prodigious/knowledgeable main characters.)

Well, without greater context, it's difficult to tell if the artist/writer genuinely believes that most all Unicorns are perfectly capable of doing this ad firearms are that weak…

Or if the information in the post is designed to mock PSAs that try to keep the informed calm under such circumstances with confidence, and the creator is absolutely aware of the potential absurdity.
Background Pony #4379
>basic shield capable of dispelling (multiple instances of) 1300+ ft/lbs of kinetic energy in a package designed to go through things
>pony can pick (multiple) tiny projectiles moving at nearly 3000fps out of thin air and redirect them efficiently and with enough force to be lethal

MAYBE if magic is something they're naturally skilled at and have had lots of training specifically to deal with this kind of threat, but you're average horn-head wouldn't stand a chance.
