Okay, but… couldn’t at least one of them look more like the design we are familiar with? I mean, yes, they’re cuter than the ones we know, but having all the good ones be cute and the evil ones be ugly is a whole other can of worms. They look like they’re from an entirely different series.

That is an interesting take on there culture and it does make sense whit everything we have seen of them.
 
Aldo to be hones we have only seen three diamond dogs in the show proper ( from what i know ) , for all we know does three may have been criminal edging in elicit mining .

Thanks. I have stopped dwelling on my disappointment regarding the lack of(meaning zero) attention the diamond dogs has gotten in the show back then, only for it to resurface now that their race are to be used again. Do take note that I am still on the fence regarding their return so I’ll be totally happy if this comic turned out okay. If not, then yeah….
 
Well since I am here, I might as well share some of the ideas and perhaps predictions floating inside my head regarding the cover page that we’re seeing. Do take note that this is just my speculation, but I think that the story as a whole might explore the diamond dog society more rather than focus on the ponies just this once. As for how their society works, well I assume that the gems they dig are not only used as currency by their race but is also used as dowry as for male diamond dogs to gift to either the female diamond dogs, to show their love to their chosen mate and all that, or to the family of the female diamond dog to show his commitment to marry her. A female diamond dogs dowry is worth by her weight which explains why a lot of male diamond dogs are willing to dig for gems and will even go so far as to use slavery(ahem Rarara) in order to maximize the gem extraction operation they do and thus allow them to show their appreciation to the female diamond dog that they love.
 
AS for what the female diamond dogs do? Well while the male diamond dogs dig and do hard labor, the female diamond dogs are the artisans of their race, able to create items of beauty and intricate craftmanship through the gems, gold and whatever material their male counterpart are able to dig deep beneath the earth. Weapons, armor and anything that is created through iron and steel are still smithed and crafted by the male, but items like dresses, the vests the males wear and specially the diamond studded collars all diamond dogs wear are crafted by the females. Hell I would even say that female diamond dogs who has become a mother will craft a special collar and gave it to her child as a way to show her love to her kids. And as the kid grows up and becomes an adult, he will craft his own collar to showcase who he or she is as an individual - that or keep the collar her mom has given to her to show that he or she is still the child his/her parents has raised.
 
And if two diamond dogs really love each other, they will craft collars for each other and attach the ones they created to the other to show their union to everyone. Lol! A pony who is made to wear a collar created by a diamond dog is by all means now married to that diamond dog - FOREVER!

Interesting take , and i agree that the canines have not been given the attention they should have been, it would be interesting to see a more masculine bases race that are not simply comic book villains .  
And the diamond dogs got particularly shafted by the canon story.

Thanks. The diamond dogs are always one of my favorite races that are introduced in FiM because of the tremendous potential they represent back when the first season showed up. They as a race do show that there are more civilized races out there that are not ‘misunderstood’ like Zecora or Gilda, with one being showered with superstitious nonsense while the other just wants to have her bestfriend back. The diamond dogs on the other hand are very aware of what they’re doing and are even unapologetic of their callous villainy if not for their (rather easy) defeat through whining and a little scuffle about(which is appropriate since this is still a children’s show we’re discussing). In short, they’re the first villains who are not only acting evil but are also aware that they’re acting evil for their own gain. Lol, they’re not even looking for redemption or attention like Nightmare Moon/Princess Luna. They just want to make Rarity do their job and will keep her for an indefinite amount of time just for the hell of it - and that kind of villainy is rather quite strong(and kind of blunt) back then in S1 and something I kind of liked all in all. ^^
 
Back to the matter of hand, the ideas of the mane six going underground to seek adventures in dog and perhaps even unknowable lands far below fueled my imaginations back then and the idea of an episode where the villainous dogs have an evil song montage as they throw the ponies to dog jail is really something I want to see! But yeah, all this waiting for nine seasons without a hint of the diamond dogs or their race as a whole is just…. ugh - disappointing to say the least - kind of depressing now that I think about it. It might be one of the reasons why I rarely draw ponies these days and have a rather - disheartened approach to FIM as a whole, but thats just me.
 
But yeah, I rather not rant more than I need too. I myself view the Diamond dog race as a combination/amalgamation of both Ogre and Dwarves seeing how greed is one of their uniting trait. They’ll work and can do great things if need be but they’re not shy to laze about and let the ‘others’ do their work for them if they can help it lol!

This is a great comment. I always imagined diamond dogs to be very similar to D&D kobolds, albeit more reclusive and with a hint of Warcraft nerubians sprinkled in there. Now that would be a cool ass race.

Ugh. I’ve already discared two comments since I am just ranting all around. My God, its just making me super anxious - and this feeling for a show about pastel colored ponies is something I’ve never felt for sometime.
 
Here’s an idea! Diamond dogs goes to Ponyville and dug a huge sinkhole and places the town for ransom in revenge for the mane six ““stealing”” their gems and the mane six have to deal again with these trouble makers and their henchmen - with a surprise twist in that it was Glimmer(before she was reformed) who told them dogs about this idea and now Glimmer also has to deal with her past actions. In the end everyone whines until them dogs give up and wanted nothing more from ponies - but feeling sympathy and perhaps as a peace offering for them dogs, the mane six with Glimmer told dogs to fill up the sink hole as well as repair Ponyville and in exchange they’ll give back the past “stolen” gems and everyone is happy as Twily is able to establish trade with these ruffians.
 
There boom! Problem solved and advanced the story. Next story, diamond dogs found out that the gem mine leads to many areas - and one of these areas are directly underneath Canterlot mountain! What secret! Much wow! Lost diamond dog hold underneath Canterlot that Princess Luna and Princess Celestia didnt told them pony masses? Why is that? Was Canterlot conquered diamond dog territory or was it just coincidence?! Wow! There boom!
 
Fuck I am ranting again.

Hopefully, dogs will still have weird cultural differences. All other species seem to… Eh. <w<

10 years of neglect on the staff and writers, only to bring them dogs back into an unrecognizably “beautiful” form. So much wow.
 
This is my 2 cents but the diamond dogs at its core(and in my eyes) are both masculine and monstrous, a huge difference compared to the feminine and more civil society ponies have. They may not be the most courteous of species and are driven more by their base desire, but they still have hints of being more than just a crude race full of henchmen material for future overlords/villainess to use and exploit. The fact that they have armor and weapons, fully functional mining operations with a healthy does of appreciation for things that are beautiful(even calling Rarara beautiful and their blatant appreciation of gems) and even the idea of slavery do indeed hint that they as a race are far more intelligent than they’re given credit even if they’re not as scholarly compared to the average Equestrian.  
Hell, the ideas of them having vast kingdoms and empires underground now lost and forgotten as shown in the early idw comics, not to mention how their monuments portray them as far more martial compared to Equestrians do show the great potential their species have as a counterpart to what ponies have to offer with all the friendship and magic them Equestrians offer. Its even possible that Luna and Celestia are (very) familiar with the troubles these subterranean monstrous species of uncouth pony-napper does, which of course strains the relations ponies have with them dogs compared to the more civil races out there like the Abyssinians, Minotaurs and others.
 
But yeah, lets just make them dogs feminine and the same as the ponies. They as a race are just like us with fashion, high society and all the trappings modern civil society has. Leave those ideas of fantasy, where ugly monsters with lost kingdoms lurking under the ground to kidnap you, out of the doorway. That is so nerdy and boring haha.
 
PS: I hope I am mistaken by all my presumption and we get something far better or acceptable than what most of us assume. Bringing them dogs after 10 years of mlp show neglect(hell I am still so salty the FlimFlams have more showtime than the dogs) is a big deal always.  
PPS: Yes. I am still super salty how they as a race are so super wasted in the show. Them dogs are blatantly created to be henchmen and muscle material for other characters(like Trixie and Glimmer) to exploit and use. BUt I dunno, lets insert more Changelings and Flim fucking Flam cause we got to brony bait hard right? No one likes these creepy ugly motherfucking dogs so lets just ignore these ugly mutts who are integral in establishing Rarity’s character until the motherfucking final season and lets sweep them under the rug. Geez.

If they aren’t quadrupedal during walking scenes, then there’d legitimately be something to discuss. ^w^
