To be honest, they’ve been cruel to him off and on the entire series. Granted most of that has been inconsistent writing by Spike and other characters.
Shoot. Seasons 4 & 5 are borderline unwatchable for me with the Spikeabuse physically and mentally. Not to mention that Twilight’s treatment of Spike was why she was in the bottom half of my favorite manes most of the shows run but it got a little bit better near the end of the series.

She didn’t. Hence why later he had a cold, because he fell into the icy lake. And they laughed. No offense to anyone that disagrees, but I really hated that scene. They laugh at the idea of a child getiing hypothermia and dying. That’s just sick. Who laughs at that? Not complaining about the image itself though. It’s pretty well drawn.

I like to think that while the girls were humored by the image of spike having a surprise wake up when the ice melted, Twilight levitated him back to her before it actually happened.
