I’m pretty sure it was intended to be the series finale. Everyone by now has heard of the Sixty-five Episode Curse, the quasi-law put in place by TV networks that says kids shows end at exactly 65 episodes because of archaic syndication rules.
 
What I think happened is that this episode was written as the grand finale. Then while it was in production, the show was unexpectedly renewed, causing the writers to hastily redo the ending (and prompted the call for new writers we heard about several months ago; some of the old writers, assuming this was the end, had already started on other projects).
 
The end result of all this will most likely be a Season 4 that will have no idea where to go, at least at first; Hasbro’s toy division meddling in production even more than before; and a Brony community continuing to rip itself apart (it’s certainly stopped growing).
 
I look forward to it. (no seriously, I’m happy MLP:FiM broke the Curse)
