Say what you will about whether or not it should be so iconic, the use of it in Detective Pikachu was great.

Same reason they show the TF2 Spy with a paper mask. So we, the audience, can tell it’s a disguise. Dramatic irony.
And it always amuses me how this face has become the iconic representation of a transformed Ditto when the whole point of that episode was getting Duplica’s to stop doing that.
