Starlight was the best thing to happen to the show. But her backstory is worse than Cozy Glow’s. It was worse than nothing at all. Toning it down because censors wouldnt allow for an actual tragic story until the movie, was a mistake. Now they’ve written themslves into a corner where they can’t imply their way out of it.  
She’s got a strong personality. And that has pretty much singlehandedly kept her going all this time as such a brilliant addition. Not her powers, not her past, it’s her that makes her so good.

I mean, I like Starlight as a character, should note, and my point was more that, “is say, Luna really that much meaningfully deeper in this regard, regarding what’s shown on the show, as far as how she became a villain?”

I can’t think of anyone, so why anyone’d list that as a merit is beyond me, or conversely, a downside that’s especially the case.
