Y’know, Nintendo in 1983 or 1984 almost licensed the Famicom to Atari for USA distribution. (But Atari turned ‘em down, because they got upset that Nintendo licensed the original “Donkey Kong” to their competitor the Colecovision.) So the NES was almost the “Atari Famicom,” or “Atari Entertainment System.”
Probably for the best that happened, as that might’ve lead to legal issues between Atari & Nintendo down the road.
@Selaphiel
Actually, it’s a regular brick sized Gameboy, (though colored black as part of the “Play it Loud!” line) the Gameboy Pocket was smaller, the speaker was different, and it’s LCD screen was clearer, and truely black & white instead of green.
I remember there was a Sega Game Gear commercial done in the vein of a political attack ad, that criticized the colored Gameboy systems, stating they were, “being dressed up to fool you. What’s next? Cute li’l, frilly, tutus?”
Which is not just ironic, but hypocritical, because Sega actually started having multiple colored Game Gear handheld systems too, and I remember seeing a kid playing a blue one.
@Patachu

@Beau Skunky
Ah yes!
There’s many people who DIY custom gameboys like that. I’m keeping these old ones just for making one myself like this. Some little Ariduno or Microchip controller and a decent screen, and dump a ton of roms.
Nintendo never see any much interest on keeping their legacy hardware, so it’s just up to us and the generosity of a lot of hardware and software hackers to keep these old toys alive :3
@luckreza8
yep, I rescued this one from a garage sales as the guy was about to dump it, and filled it with a bunch of old games and software that won’t run or scale correctly on modern machines.
it’s nothing but it’s something I think it’s worth to transmit. Just like keeping CDs, vinyl records and books, it’s in a sense our history.
also, I like its keyboard. No “windows” key.
@Ogen
yep, I also have a X60t someone offered me years ago, and it’s still a great machine for digital art and stuff.
@Patachu
Wish Nintendo would make a “Gameboy Classic Edition,” but apparently that’d be too expensive now if they want to give it a clearer, backlit, modern LCD screen, and stuff.
Plus Nintendo said they aren’t interested in making anymore plug-and-play mini classic consoles, despite how insanely well the NES & SNES ones did. (Which they said they just made to bridge the gap between the WiiU & Switch eras.)
@Beau Skunky
yeah me too… found this one but the display is pretty much dead, but still better than mine who had its insides completely corroded by leaked batteries.
@lipnoodle19
i admit, I cheated a bit, that’s Seamonkey, basically Netscape with the “Orthodox” theme. And it’s a solid Mozillesque browser for old machines.
The original Japanese NES?

I miss my Famicom….
I actually miss mine…
I recognize that thickness.
In fact, I have the original grey brick beside me right now.
