Well, media and age groups have never gone hand in hand. Things are complicated and we can't decide what is appropriate or mature for adults let alone children.

On one hand you have deep, intelectual topics like purpouse in life, meaning of life, survival, death, nasty shit which are things children/teens or even adults can't comprehend. Open for philosophical interpretations, ambiguosness, harsh reality…

On the other you have the really vulgar nonsensical human fantasy shit, the sex, the killing, the trash talking, the hatred, the dumb challanges, the obsessions, silly interests, the primitive humor, the bullying, the mobbing,… All things that are based on the notion of what's "cool". Often times, these things can influence people in a very negative way, since they're easy to understand and form thoughts and opinions around.

So what I'm saying is that it's hard to determine age appropriatness, since all the things we consume are stupid and nonsensical.

Man, that's a more interesting story than whatever's going on in the 'net space. I'm sorry for the pain you must have went through. Bad shit happens. You look after yourself, alright? Ain't worth crying over no laptop or internet when you got one life to live! And you gotta forgive your mother, it's over now. What's done is done.

@Beau Skunky
actually there is some stuff made for adults that's not actually inappropriate for children.
also truth be told there is no true list of what is or isn't appropriate for children it really depends on the person

Actually, originally in the '60s, the Flintstones were originally for adults. It just seems tamer by today's standards, and fell into the animation age ghetto, and people were ignorant about the dangers of smoking too. Still the cigarette sponsor & show were originally aimed at adults.

@northern haste
Yeah, then there's the opposite extreme that in order animation be for "adults," it has to be full of vulgarities, violence, sexual/offensive edgy jokes, and such. Serious adult animation outside of anime has gotten rare too.

@Beau Skunky

It has puppets though.

I just found out that The Flintstones beer commercials preserved on YouTube are also considered "for kids"…

Another thing that bothers me a little is that there doesn't seem to be any in between it's just made for children or not.
I mean just because something was made for children doesn't mean it's suitable for all children

@O. Hancock

YouTube's dumb bots actually targeted anything that would seem even remotely for kids. Even original content such as 12 Days of Elves or Don't Touch Me I'm Scared. So it's like that earlier comment said, YouTube follows the logical fallacy that it it's animated then it must be only intended for kids to watch.

Besides, even if things like that be changed back without any issues from YouTube, any other content creators whose works happen to actually be family friendly are screwed unless they add a bunch of pointless inappropriate content just so they can claim "it's not for kids".

YouTube just doesn't seem to get the concept of entertainment being for a wide audience. It's either "for kids" or "for adults" and nothing else.

Yeah, there's no problem with marking children's content as for children and not collecting data on them. I just think that not allowing any interaction with these videos is dumb and unnecessary. Just because people interact with the video doesn't mean that the website has to collect and sell that data. The whole reason coppa exists is to protect children's privacy until they're deemed able to consent to getting their privacy buttfucked like the rest of us online. Why can't YouTube just not collect, selll, and use the data from these videos? They're legally mandated to not allow children's data to be collected, not to be children's babysitters.

Another thing, I think that other guy was probably talking more about the plethora of other brony videos that are definitely NOT for kids but are getting marked as for kids anyway, like SMILE HD and the pantsu/clop videos and stuff. Animated =/= for kids.

Now, of course almost any YouTuber can just go change that setting and mark the video as not for kids in those cases, without penalty. That's obvious, and it's the YouTuber's fault for not curating their channel better if they don't. (Speaking as a fellow YouTuber here who's actually dealt with COPPA already.) But it does kinda suck for the channels where the people lost their password years ago and will never log back in. (Also from experience. I have an old channel called Borg Collective, and I think my Notorious B.I.G. the Tank Engine video is currently being shown to dozens of of kids every month because the algorithms are stupid. It's still my fault, alomg with my family's, and also Google/YouTube's to a lesser extent. Cause I was homeless and moved out to New York for awhile. When I moved, YouTube thought I was suspicious logging in from a different location, even though my password was correct. They locked me out and I couldn't use the phone backup because I didn't have that phone number anymore, and I couldn't use the backup codes I'd put on my laptop because my mom accidentally broke my laptop when I told her not to use it and she must've been in a drunken stupor and ignored me and used and dropped it or some shit cause the hinge was all fucked up bad and a ribbon cable broke because of it when I came back or her place to pick up my laptop while I was on the street. She's killed herself since then though so I probably shouldn't have said anything about it. I'd rather have her alive than the laptop. I have messed up emotional issues. I was only awake for 5 hours yesterday. Probably gonna end up like my mom. Just posting for the record here in case I go missing and anyone wonders what happened to me.)

I see what you're saying, but romance is a deeper topic if you look at it that way. I mean, no one has sex in MLP. No one discusses serious relationships. It's still light hearted fun targeted towards a demographic of ~ 8 years old. That doesn't mean an older audience can't tune in but their perspectives are generally irrelevant as the brand is not marketed towards such.
