Agreed, it didn’t look like TTG. TTG had thicker outlines, smaller heads, longer limbs, different eyes, and such.

And Pony Life is dead now, so it doesn’t matter.

Also, with Pony Life, an upcoming movie, and G5, the ride never ends.

And seriously, these aren’t even the worst faces in the show.

Maybe a social experiment to see if there’s a bottom limit where even your hardest fans will stop defending you.  
Guess there isn’t.

While I liked the original animation style more, at least when it came to faces, I don’t mind the newer style. At least it doesn’t do something completely out of left field and like… I don’t know, do something insane and make it look like the abomination that is Teen Titans Go.

One would say that since the show has been always faic friendly, no one would bat an eye on it.
 
It was retroactively foretold if anything, given the show’s pechant for wild animation.

You seriously don’t remember Pinkie’s freak out faces in “Party of One,” Applebloom’s exaggerated pouty face, or “Best Night Ever’s” famed Flutterrage, Spike’s mouth/face stretching as he screamed in “Feeling Pinkie-Keen,” Gilda being electrocuted, Trixie’s reaction to the Ursa, Twilight’s nervous/awkward looks, that “Ren & Stimpy”-esc close-up of Celestia’s deranged pet bird, Cranky Doodle’s reactions to Pinkie, EVERY face that Bulk Biceps does, and such?
 
You’re fine with all that, but Celestia’s nervous/awkward face, Luna’s smirk, and Twilight’s nearly facing the camera face with U-eyes here bother you?  
(In fact, honestly the Twilight one doesn’t even seem like a good comparison, as she’s not even facing the same way, nor is her expression that exaggerated, and it’s honestly fairly normal looking to me.)

I’m talking about the season as a whole, not just a few select episodes.

I don’t think so? I re-watched seasons 1&2 very recently and I do not recall there being anywhere near as many exaggerated facial expressions of this caliber.

Honestly, the episodes featured in the above image had fewer silly faces then “Lesson Zero” did. So if you’re fine with Lesson Zero doing it, you should be fine with these two episodes, at least.  
I’m sure you can take all the silly faces from Seasons 1, or 2, (or ect.) and you’d probably have just as many as Season 9 did, as there’s plenty of S9 moments of them looking normal, as well, and some less comical episodes. (Not to mention, let’s not forget there’s looong Youtube videos of Season 1’s many animation errors, so it’s not always perfectly on-model either.)
 
The only S9 episode I feel pushed it a bit was “A Trivial Pursuit,” but that episode seemed to of been made to get all the crazy/stress out of Twilight. So it’s basically just “Lesson Zero 2.” (And it’s basically just one episode, as well.)

Its not “silly facial expressions=bad”. Stop attacking a straw man and simplifying the argument. Silly faces are bad when they’re overdone, as they’re distracting and don’t seem to fit the “mood” of mlp:fim.

They aren’t new, but they were certainly overdone in season 9. Also new IS bad if that new thing happens to be bad, so using zoomer speak isn’t exactly a good argument.  
Those season 2 faces you presented were from one episode where a character is brought to her literal breaking point so it makes sense for her to act weird and perform off model facial expressions to better highlight what’s happening to her. Most of the time though, less is more.

I still don’t get why some pretend like silly faces are somehow a new, or “later edition” to the show. (And we all know anything “new” is bad!)
 
I’d say the above “Season 9” expressions are actually more tame, and on-model then these Season 2 faces. (Can’t put the blame on Jim and Gillian for these. What? Are they the new “Meghan McCarthy” whom get blamed for everything now?)
 

 
Not saying I dislike these, in fact I find them rather amusing. I’ll take crazy/silly/comical expressions like these over the characters only having 2 facial expressions, like G3.

What’s there to argue? you’ve clearly got your mind made up that “silly facial expressions = bad” and there’s not a damn thing I can say that will change your mind about it. All one can do is comment on how strongly you feel about it; strong enough that you actually made and posted that last image with rarity yourself, just for this comment thread! I’d call that salt.
