Beats me, but that’s basically how it went down for these characters…
 
If it is a thing in reality, I’d assume it’s based on the notion that a child – or teen, as in this case – has a right to regular contact with both parents.

Is that a thing in real life? I’ve heard of custody battles where the custodial parent is forced to allow the child to visit the noncustodial parent. That’s how it was for me growing up. I’d spend weekdays with my mom, and visit my dad on weekends.
 
I know there’s child support, where you support the parent financially as compensation for not being in your child’s life, but I haven’t heard it the other way around, where the child is forced upon an unwilling parent who clearly isn’t interested.

Long story short: broken home.
 
Long story slightly less short: Her parents almost broke up after graduating due to mom’s career aspirations, but dad had the cliche stupid panic idea and “accidentally” knocked her up.  
Mom left a few years later when she found out.  
Fast forward to Apogee’s teens and mom’s forced by court order to start seeing her daughter again, cue reader depression.
