I am not sure when I started, but I know it was more than two years ago.
When did you start? Looking at the App store, I actually downloaded it when it launched (November 8, 2012). I guess I must of heard about it on some site like Equestria Daily or a message board or something like that (I don’t remember). However I went through many times throughout the years (especially early on) when I didn’t play for months at a time, so my level is lower then it should be.

If you are asking where are you getting 300 gems, do the limited time quests. When they repeat, the individual prizes are replaced with 50 gems each (meaning that if you finish a limited time quest a second time, you can get at least 200 gems each time).
