If it’s a long drop or odds are met, then it’ll separate two of the vertabrea and cause paralysis from the neck down. I think only sometimes it breaks in such a way that they lose control of their lungs so couldn’t breathe even if they weren’t hanging?
 
But anyways, typically it takes a long drop to break the neck.
 
Most of the time, especially in suspension or short-drop hangings, nothing breaks, it’ll KO and kill by obstructing blood flow to the brain.
 
But you’re right that the asphyxiation is actually secondary. Sometimes they can actually get enough air through that they’d live were it not for the blood flow obstruction.

Either way, still can’t die from it.

Hung people die because their spinal cord in cervical part is crushed, not due to lack of oxygen.
