One of my headcanons is that the talisman has the ability to magically disguise any creature in the same vein as modern changelings. The first batch of changelings (led by Queen Mirage) had to rely on this to transform, but eventually used it so many times that some it’s magic implanted itself into them, and this magic was passed down to every generation of changelings afterwards….

I may be wrong, but who knows. :/
