Png is a good file format. I use pngs it all the time in mh line of work. You can get really good resolution and still not have a large file afterwards. :P

Higher resolution or Better file format.
 
A 5 Megabyte image is likely to look better than a 300 Kilobyte image just like a 10 Megabyte song will sound better than a 3 Megabyte song.
 
Jpeg files have compression artifacts on them to save space. PNG files Don’t. So when a PNG file is found or released that is better than what is currently on derpibooru, It is up to uploaders and artists to upload them so that they can better enjoyed by those that have an eye for image fidelity. Also some of us have higher resolution monitors where doubling and even sometimes quadrupling the image resolution can make a very big difference.
 
So put it shortly. Better file means lesser better file has to go.
