In the show, Discord brought up how Tirek uses magic becuase he feels he won’t live up to Vorak’s expectations. In the comics, Vorak was clearly against Tirek learning magic at all. It could be possible that isn’t the case in the show, but I guess we’ll never know unless those season 10 comics say otherwise.

It’s pretty obvious: King Vorak has been imported from IDW, one-way (just like Maud Pie from books and Tirek from G1). The only thing imported was that Tirek had a father, his name was Vorak, and that’s he’s a king. He could look completely different and have completely different personality.

AND don’t forget how his little GAM-GAM kicked him outta the house after he accidentally broke her FAVORITE expensive damnation vase, thereby releasing ALL the little trapped tortured pony souls into the ether!

It goes by so fast, and all you have to know to a degree is that Tirek had a family (the “gran gran” tease from Frienemies).
 
For those of us wishing more IDW stuff got in (like Tiberius), this was the way to play it, nothing that would make people go “whaaaaa—?” but instead a nod to those that knew.

I wonder how confused people who haven’t followed the comics were at this part. I’m certainly not complaining though; this finale had all the callbacks (ALL OF THEM) and I loved that.

The show had that, just with more Slice of Life scenarios. From what I heard G5 is going to be more adventure Centric.

I wish we could have a full fledged adventure MLP series with fleshed out lore and characters.

I mean, he’d manipulated Sombra into trying to blast Fluttershy so he could “sacrifice” himself (which from Sombra’s perspective, he was plainly just outsmarting Discord), then gave an encouraging speech to the Mane Six, and here, he was blatantly trying to piss Tirek off so he’d make a mistake and try to off him immediately.
 
He’s an excellent manipulator, even without his powers. (speaking of which, it’s funny how Cozy Glow was trying to manipulate him with her trademark false sweetness until Chrysalis cut her off).
