hanna barbera

dic

cartoon network

nickoldeon etc. you’re right about one thing . every studio animation got to be real careful because they don’t break the rules, or go over the line. like what happen to cartoon network adult merchandise logo that almost ruined banned or lose money, like hasbro when someone crossed the line with no m rated adult content that got guy fired, almost ruined franchise fandom, like when someone stole all the money from the company they worked for tmnt, like someone break in & tried to copycat, copy,& steal ideas for both company that argue digimon, & pokemon, & take money for yourself tried reboot classic cartoon that got cancelled, & when someone cartoon show got bankruptcy cannot come up with new ideas next season. it happens all the time. who knows .

…It had the financial backing of Hasbro, and they spent significantly more capital on FIM…
It’s off topic, so let’s not get into that too much, but Hasbro did not gave any significant financial backing to FIM, at least on at the start. There’s a long story of how they were trying to skimp out on everything during the initial production, which lead to a lot of Faust’s frustration, which eventually lead to her leaving. First season of FIM turned out as good as it was because Faust wanted to make a cartoon of her dreams and was willing to work all extra hours required to make it happen. After FIM blew up Hasbro started paying way more attention and probably more money, but not in the beginning.

Well, an argument could be made that, compared to its contemporaries when it first aired and now, FIM is not an ordinary cartoon. The quality of the animation and art direction, and the sheer scale of its world and character roster dwarfs mostly every other cartoon in recent memory. It had the financial backing of Hasbro, and they spent significantly more capital on FIM than a network would for the average cartoon because they knew it would give them an ROI in the form of increased toy sales. That’s the only reason FIM was allowed to exist - it, in some way, generates a lot of profit. That’s why Hasbro could hire Faust and the original staff to make the show we all know and love.

Regarding the rest of your comment the animation industry in 2019 is a far cry from what it was back in 2012. What little profit margins there were back then have increasingly shrunk as more people cut the cord or spend most of their time away from television. There could be a chance that Hasbro does with G5 what it did with G4, but I suppose that remains to be seen.

I agree, and slightly not. You’re describing exactly how business works and that’s exactly how G4 was made - on a very thin budget (because Hasbro didn’t believed it will be any good). But the part where I don’t agree is that - a quality 3D show on a budget can be made, it doesn’t have to be a huge money sink to be good (look at TMNT 2012). The main things that has to go right for it to be good is the art style and writing. And this short does not instill me with confidence that the art style will be good. But also this short could be nothing and G5 will look completely differently. Maybe even good. We don’t know.

The thing is that television shows are made on shoestring budgets by necessity to maximize the small profit margins they can only get, since television shows on their own are barely profitable. Hasbro could spend more to get their 3D models to the same quality of therealdjthed’s, but they would be running their shows at a deficit, in other words, they’d be losing money.

The number one rule of business is that you have to make more than what you spend, and Hasbro is not exempt. They have money, time and resources, but as long as the deficit problem still exists, Hasbro won’t be producing quality models anytime soon, unless the animation industry adopts profitable business models.

I mean, there is a couple of layers to that.

First, Hasbro aren’t Disney, they aren’t artists themselves, they hire artists and studios to make shows for them (and based on G3.5 who know if they even have an artistic taste). Basically we can’t expect them to grow artistically and do better next time. It’s all just up to the talents in the studio they hire. (and, as much as I want to, I don’t think they will be hiring from the fandom or asking the advice. it just not how big businesses work)

Second is that, yes, they can demand from the studio to give them a certain level of quality, but I feel like while we fans are always trying to make things look as good as possible, Hasbro as a business will just settle for something good enough. For them the show is still secondary to the toys, so exactly how much do they really care about it is the question. (but I’m willing to bet they are testing and double testing the appeal of their toys right now)

G4’s art style turned out as good as it is not because of Hasbro, but because there was a person with a clear artistic vision for how the show should look. But I don’t think they have that a person this time around for G5.

I wish I’m wrong, and it comes out and it’s great, but… you know.

I actually have high hopes that their animation improves over time. Based on what I’ve seen, this is their first fully-3D animated video. They may have enough time to improve.

I also hope G5 won’t be anything too generic in it’s storytelling.

I mean, it’s too early to really judge. We only know the leaked info from a couple of years ago, everything could’ve been changed. And this short could just be nothing and G5 could look completely different. But yeah, I do fear that Hasbro has learned nothing and will run MLP into the ground once again. But we’ll have to wait and see.

Where to begin? Pinkie’s proportions are too humanoid that it almost looks like a halfassed fursuit. Even some of her poses look uncanny. The voice actress wasn’t high pitched enough, and the art style looks very cheap.

I’ve seen better 3D Pinkie Pie models made for free by enthusiasts in their spare time.

She definitely had more varied and nuanced facial expressions than the typical low-budget 3D CG. On the other hoof, circular hooves and not Andrea voice.
