I mean sometimes, othertimes they’re doing it for rewards, or because they’re losing and want to get off that ship before it sinks. This isn’t even a good guy/bad guy thing, it’s a pragmatics thing. North Korea has a collection of defectors as well they take care of. It’s just not smart for a nation to execute those who defect to them. There are ways to deal with people that aren’t trusted other than execution, ways that any nation state more advanced than the stone age has access to.
well, if you’re the good guys, then you can trust defectors, since they only defected because they saw the light of reason, not because they were untrustworthy.

Never said trust, but the easy battle to win is one not fought. Not executing POWs makes surrender a better option, and rewarding defectors means getting more defectors. It’s why the Koreas make such a bid deal of rewarding and protecting defectors. He’d never be trusted for sure, but he’d be shipped well away from the front lines and kept in a gilded cage. The Legion if they found out would be out for his blood for sure, but would have a hard time reaching him once he was back in California proper.
Never said “mass execution.” But they also won’t trust a defector, much less a Legion soldier.

You’re mistaking the NCR for the Legion, or how spycraft and defectors work. The NCR would be unlikely to ever trust him, but mass execution of prisoners is not NCR style.
I mean it would be tragic if later on either of them died in a ambush set by the other’s faction.
The NCR is more likely to just kill him the moment he’s no longer useful. And the Legion would kill him if they found out he defected. There’s no good solution for him.
